The image presents two sides of the same sheet of aged paper placed side by side. On the left, the recto, a panoramic view of the Piazza del Popolo in Rome unfolds in pen and brown ink with gray wash. In the foreground, a low stone parapet with bollards runs across the bottom; two tiny seated figures rest at the far left near a building with a projecting wooden balcony. The tall Egyptian obelisk on its pedestal dominates the middle ground, while the open square is dotted with minute horse-drawn carriages, pedestrians and faintly sketched boats in the distance. In the background, domes and Roman palaces line the horizon, and on the right stand out the church of Santa Maria del Popolo with its rose window and dome, and the monumental arched Porta del Popolo. The horizon is low and the sky is left almost blank with soft shading. A handwritten inscription at the top reads «Prospetto della Piazza del Popolo» and a longer cursive text runs along the bottom. The paper shows foxing, irregular deckled edges and framing lines. On the right, the verso, only a very faint graphite sketch of a grand interior arch is visible, likely San Giovanni in Laterano, with barely-there outlines, water stains and the creamy yellowed tone of empty paper filling most of the sheet.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the obelisk on the left and let your eye travel across the square toward the church and gate on the right, following the one-point perspective. Pause on the tiny foreground figures and carriages: they give human scale to the monumental architecture. Then compare with the near-empty verso: its faintness reveals the artist's working method from light underdrawing to finished view.

ContextContexto

This work belongs to the series Eighteen Views of Rome, made in 1664 by Lievin Cruyl (Flemish, c. 1640–c. 1720), a Flemish draftsman and architect active in Rome. According to Cleveland Museum of Art data, the medium is pen and brown ink and brush and gray wash over stylus and graphite, with framing lines in brown ink, classified as a Drawing. The recto depicts the Piazza del Popolo as it appeared in the 17th century, with its obelisk, church and northern city gate. The verso holds a light sketch for San Giovanni in Laterano. The precise purpose of the series is not documented, but such vedute were common among Baroque travelling artists documenting the cityscape.

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I focus on the yellowish cream paper with its stains and irregular edges. I see pen and brown ink with gray wash over stylus and graphite underdrawing, held inside framing lines in brown ink. On the front the ink sharply defines the obelisk, the church and the tiny carriages; on the back the faint graphite of the interior arch almost vanishes. It is a fragile testimony from 1664 that needs low light and controlled humidity to survive.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer I am drawn to the Egyptian obelisk at the center of Piazza del Popolo, an ancient solar marker brought to Rome. Cruyl draws it tall on its pedestal, dominating the open square beneath a nearly blank sky. It makes me think of how obelisks worked as gnomons and how the low horizon leaves all the focus on light. The 1664 drawing turns a Baroque square into an urban observatory of shadows and orientation.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This sheet has two drawings in one! On the left I see a huge square with a giant stick in the middle, that is the obelisk, and little houses with domes, carriages tiny like toys and two little people sitting on a low wall. At the top it says «Prospetto della Piazza del Popolo» in pretty handwriting. On the right the sheet is almost empty and you only see a ghost arch that is very faded. It looks like the artist drew on both sides so he would not waste paper.
