What you would seeLo que verías
At first glance the sheet looks blank, an aged paper in yellowed ivory and pale cream, speckled with time — brown foxing spots, damp stains and faint tidemarks. It fills almost the entire frame, held by translucent adhesive tapes and paper remnants along the edges, visible as shiny patches at top and bottom. A pronounced vertical fold divides the sheet into two halves down the middle. Against this weathered ground, barely perceptible graphite sketches float on the right side: extremely fine, almost erased lines outlining windows with pediments, pilasters and classical cornices. Toward the lower right a slightly clearer study shows a window between fluted pilasters and an entablature; higher up, three or four even fainter sketches appear, one elongated like a balustrade. Beneath the paper, reversed printed capital letters show through — B, R, N, SIE — ghostly traces of another backing. In the lower right corner there is a small circular collection stamp and handwritten pencil annotations along the bottom edge. The light is flat and diffuse, with no shadows, emphasizing the rough, fibrous and fragile texture of the worn, foxed paper.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start by seeing the whole sheet as an aged object, then move your eye to the right third where the faint marks lie. Look for the clearest small window study at the lower right as an anchor, then let your eye find the even fainter sketches above it, almost dissolving into the paper.
ContextContexto
The Cleveland Museum of Art records this work as the verso of a drawing by Lievin Cruyl (Flemish, ca. 1640-ca. 1720), dated 1665 and made in graphite. Cruyl, a Flemish architect and draftsman, lived in Rome between 1664 and 1675 where he produced many views and architectural studies of Baroque Rome. The title indicates the sketches depict windows and pilasters of the attic storey of the Collegio di Propaganda Fide, a Baroque palace by Borromini and Bernini in Rome. They are probably quick working studies taken from life. The sheet shows signs of age and later mounting and conservation.

Curious detailDato curioso
The Collegio di Propaganda Fide, founded in 1622 to train missionaries, has a facade by two rival Baroque masters — part by Bernini and part by Borromini — which Cruyl documented in detail while in Rome.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I focus on what many overlook: this yellowed ivory paper speckled with brown foxing and humidity halos. I notice the central vertical fold, the translucent adhesive tapes and the shiny patches from the old mount. The graphite sketches are so faint and fine they seem about to vanish. I worry about its fragility, the rough fibrous texture, the diffuse flat light that reveals every fiber. It is a fragile record of fieldwork from 1665, aged and delicate, meant to be protected.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
As an amateur astronomer I am fascinated by how this paper looks like a pale night sky. Against the mottled cream and ivory background, the graphite sketches are like faint constellations you must search for patiently. On the right I can make out a window between fluted pilasters and above it other even fainter outlines like dim stars. The ghost letters reversed underneath, B, R, N, SIE, look like distant signals. The small circular collection stamp below is like a tiny moon. You need to train your eye to see the faint.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
This sheet feels like it is playing hide and seek with me. At first it looks empty, just old creamy paper with little brown freckles. But if I look really close on the right side, there are super light pencil doodles of windows with little sticks on the sides. There is a fold in the middle that splits it in two. At the bottom there are backwards letters like ghosts and shiny sticky tapes at the top and bottom. You have to be a detective to find the hidden drawings!
