What you would seeLo que verías
The drawing presents a wide, elevated view of a Roman square dominated at center by a large church with a symmetrical two-story façade, triangular pediment, scroll-like volutes, columns, niches with statues, and a ribbed dome topped by a lantern and cross. The building sits on a short platform with steps and low side ramps. In the foreground stretches a vast, almost empty paved piazza, rendered in pale beige with very light lines. Scattered across it are tiny figures in seventeenth-century dress: pairs talking, a man walking, groups of three, a small street stall with an umbrella, and horse-drawn carriages, one at left and one at right. Their shadows are short strokes on the ground. Orderly palace façades line both sides and recede in perspective, with rows of windows, cornices, and tile roofs in gray-blue and soft red. At far left, a building is cropped by the edge, giving the sense of a window onto the city. The aged paper is cream and tan, with visible creases, stains, and thin framing lines. At top, calligraphic Italian handwriting titles the view; at bottom, a Latin legend and small letters placed on the buildings identify each site.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the church on the central axis, then let the two streets pull your eye toward the edges. Next, look down at the tiny figures and carriages: their smallness changes the scale of the square. Finally, read the letters scattered across the buildings and match them to the legend below.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this drawing from 1665 by Flemish artist Lievin Cruyl (c. 1640-c. 1720) belongs to the series Eighteen Views of Rome and is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. It was made in pen and brown ink with brush and gray wash over graphite. It shows the Gesù in Rome, the Jesuits' principal church, recognizable by its two-story façade and dome. The inscription at the top in Italian and the legend at the bottom in Latin identify nearby buildings. Cruyl is known for precise views of seventeenth-century Rome. The exact circumstances of this sheet's commission are not known from the source.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual fact: the square is drawn so vast and empty that the horse-drawn carriages look like toys and people like miniatures, even though the church is only a few steps away from them in the drawing's perspective.
Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- Why might the artist make the square seem emptier and larger than it would feel in person?¿Por qué el artista habrá hecho que la plaza se vea más vacía y grande de lo que se sentiría en persona?
- What does the inclusion of a legend and guide letters turn this drawing into, beyond a work of art?¿En qué convierte a este dibujo la inclusión de una lista y letras guía, además de ser una obra de arte?
- How does our perception of the church change when we compare it with the tiny figures and carriages?¿Cómo cambia nuestra percepción de la iglesia al compararla con las figuras y carruajes diminutos?

I pause on the cream and ochre paper, with its folds and stains that reveal the passage of time since 1665. I look at the pen and brown ink and gray wash over graphite: precise strokes for the two-story facade, the triangular pediment, the scrolls and the ribbed dome with its cross. I notice how Lievin Cruyl leaves the plaza almost empty in very light beige, with short shadows and tiny figures. Above, the Italian calligraphy and below the Latin text are part of the drawing and I must keep them legible without erasing their fragility.

I see this huge and almost empty plaza as if it were a clear sky for observing. The church of the Gesù at the center, with its dome and lantern topped by a cross, reminds me of an observatory pointing upward. From this elevated and perspectival view, the side palaces with rows of windows recede like ordered constellations. The tiny figures, the carriages and the little stall with its umbrella are moving dots under an even light. The short shadows make me think of a high noon sun, ideal for measuring and drawing with precision.

This plaza is huge and almost empty! It looks like an enormous court in very light beige where everyone could fit. At the back is the big church with its dome like a little hat and a cross on top, with small stairs and ramps to go up. I like to search for the tiny people: some are chatting, a man walks alone and there are two horse-drawn carriages, one on each side. There is also a little stall with an umbrella. On the sides there are houses with many windows and red and gray roofs. The paper looks old and wrinkly like a treasure map.
