What you would seeLo que verías

In the foreground, set against a smooth, neutral gray background, two ceramic pharmacy bottles stand side by side, each with a globular body, a narrow elongated neck and a slightly flared mouth. Both share the same tin-glazed earthenware form, glossy white with hand-painted decoration in soft yet saturated colors. The left bottle displays a hunting vignette around its belly: a mustard-yellow hare with long ears leaps leftward, pursued by a pale bluish-white hound with a pink collar and open muzzle, both outlined in dark blue with delicate shading; beneath them a narrow ground of green, ochre and speckled brown suggests grassy terrain. Above the animals a blue scrollwork border curls, and below a banderole bears the black capital inscription «SCABIOS». The right bottle shows the same hound alone, mid-stride, wearing a mustard collar, over identical speckled ground, with the inscription «CAPILLV». The necks are ornamented with triangular geometric motifs in navy, green and orange, divided by horizontal bands in dark blue and ochre. The foot of each bottle carries stylized wave scrolls in green, orange and blue. Even, cool lighting highlights the sheen of the glaze, subtle potting irregularities and the fluid brushwork of the Renaissance maiolica painter.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the lively animal frieze on the belly and trace the chase from hare to hound. Then read the inscribed band below and look up to the neck to see how the geometric pattern frames and echoes the central scene.

ContextContexto

According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, this is a pair of tin-glazed earthenware pharmacy bottles, or maiolica, dated about 1500–1510 and attributed to Faenza in the Papal States, Italy. By an unknown maker, in the Decorative Art and Design collection, their inscriptions point to medicinal and household use: SCABIOS suggests scabious water, a teasel-root preparation used to clean velvet, and CAPILLV to maidenhair water distilled from a fern-like plant. They are early Renaissance examples where practical containers were also elaborately decorated, though their exact original pharmacy context is not fully documented.

Curious detailDato curioso

Faenza maiolica was so renowned in Renaissance Europe that the town gave its name to tin-glazed pottery in general, known as faience in French and English and fayenza in Spanish.

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a restorer I focus on the shine of the tin glaze and how the cool light reveals tiny irregularities in the white enamel. I love the fluid brushwork that draws outlines in dark blue and fills them with ochre, green and orange. I notice the horizontal bands on the neck with triangles in blue, green and orange and the wavy pattern at the base. The black inscriptions SCABIOS and CAPILLV remind me that these two bulbous bottles from Faenza, dated 1500 to 1510, held medicinal waters and had to be both useful and beautiful.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer I like to think of these bottles as small chubby bright planets against a neutral gray background. Their spherical body and long narrow neck remind me of an observing instrument. I linger on the painted scene: on one bottle an ochre hare flees a white greyhound with a pink collar, on the other only the greyhound with an ochre collar runs over green and ochre ground dotted with brown. The cartouches with SCABIOS and CAPILLV are like constellation labels identifying scabious water and maidenhair fern water in the Renaissance pharmacy.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

They look like two bellies with long necks! The one on the left has a yellow hare with long ears running super fast and behind it a skinny white dog with a pink collar chasing it. The one on the right only has the little dog with a light brown collar. Below there is green grass with little dots and on top black letters that say SCABIOS and CAPILLV. The little neck has pretty blue, green and orange triangles. They are made of shiny white ceramic, like they were part of a pharmacy playset from a very long time ago.
