What you would seeLo que verías

On the right, a double manuscript page on aged cream and pale ochre paper shows a vividly colored rectangular miniature at its center, framed above and below by dense black Persian script arranged in six vertical columns. The painting occupies the middle third: a haloed hunter on foot, wearing an intense blue robe and a golden mail coat, drives his sword with both hands into the chest of a long-bodied, mottled grey dragon. The dragon, with open jaws, horns and whiskers, coils tightly around a dark knotted tree trunk that rises among undulating, angular rocks in ochre, beige and orange. To the right, a chestnut horse with a golden saddle and spotted caparison recoils in fear. The background is a deep blue sky with green foliage. On the left, the facing page is entirely covered with text, with a small horizontal pink and gold cartouche at the center. The paper edges are stained, creased and slightly torn, with visible fold lines and a warm, matte texture contrasting with the glossy saturated pigments of the miniature.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the columns of calligraphy to feel the rhythmic frame around the action. Then focus on the violent core: the sword entering the dragon’s chest and the coiled body hugging the tree. Notice how the agitated landscape and the monster share the same wavy brushwork, as if nature itself joins the fight.

ContextContexto

This folio belongs to the Great Mongol Shahnama, a manuscript of the Book of Kings by Firdausi (940–1019 or 1025), made around 1330–1335 in Tabriz, Iran, during the Ilkhanid period (1256–1353), by an unknown artist. The technique is opaque watercolor, ink and gold on paper, typical of Islamic painting. The scene shows Bahram Gur, a Sasanian ruler who reigned 420–438 CE, celebrated in pre-Islamic history as a hunter and dragon-slayer; his name Gur means onager, his favored game. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the surging rocks, tree trunk and dragon reveal borrowing from Chinese models adopted in Iranian painting under Mongol rule, achieving remarkable unity and energy.

I pause on the cream paper with stains and creases that speak of its age since Tabriz around 1330. I look at the opaque watercolor and gold on paper, so fragile and luminous. The central miniature is surrounded by six columns of Persian calligraphy in black ink, and on the left I see the pink and gold cartouche. The rider with a halo, intense blue tunic and golden armor plunges his sword into the mottled gray dragon coiled around itself.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What grips me most is that deep blue sky behind the fight, a night blue that seems to hold the scene together. The hunter wears a golden halo like a small sun, and the very long gray dragon coils like a twisted constellation. The ochre and orange rocks with wavy shapes recall craters seen from afar, and the chestnut horse with a golden saddle pulls back before such stylized, cosmic energy.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

The dragon is super long and all wrapped around the ugly knobby tree! It has whiskers and opens its big mouth with teeth. The man in shiny blue clothes with golden sparkles stabs it with his sword using both hands, pow! His brown horse with a little golden saddle steps back because it is scared. I like the orange and beige little rocks that look like weird tiny mountains and the very blue sky with green leaves.
