What you would seeLo que verías

A horizontal fragment of aged, beige paper with irregular, frayed, and torn edges is mounted on a much lighter, smooth cream support. The lower right portion is missing along a diagonal tear, and the top edge undulates with small nicks. Across the sheet, a floral design in gray graphite spreads from the large flower at lower center toward the corners. That flower has a round, almost closed bud, surrounded by wide, ruffled petals and leaves shaded with fine parallel hatching. Long stems curve upward, and large leaves sweep toward the upper left. On the right, a second flower is cut off by the edge, beside a straight vertical line and a darker brown strip. Small brown stains, soft shadows, and the fibrous texture of old paper are visible throughout. Most importantly, many contours are not continuous lines but rows of tiny, evenly spaced pricked holes following petals, stems, and leaves.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the large flower at center and follow its dotted outline petal by petal. Then look for the second, cropped flower on the right and the stems that try to connect them. The tiny holes change everything: this is not a finished drawing to be admired, but a working tool meant to be used and worn away.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is a French marquetry design, by an unknown maker, dated to about 1730/60 and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art in the Elisabeth Severance Prentiss Collection. Marquetry is decoration made by inlaying pieces of veneer, often different woods, into a surface. A sheet pricked along its lines could be used to transfer the pattern onto another material by dusting pigment through the holes. It probably comes from a workshop process, although the specific furniture or object it was made for is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual observation: many of the lines that look drawn from a distance are actually rows of tiny pinpricks, so the drawing is also a stencil made of holes.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What kind of object might this floral pattern have decorated, and how would it change in colored woods?¿Qué tipo de objeto pudo decorar este motivo floral y cómo cambiaría al realizarse en maderas de colores?
  2. What does the torn, incomplete state of the sheet tell us about work inside an 18th-century workshop?¿Qué nos dice el estado roto e incompleto de la hoja sobre el trabajo dentro de un taller del siglo XVIII?
  3. How does your reading change when you realize the lines are also holes for transferring the design?¿Cómo cambia tu lectura al darte cuenta de que las líneas también son agujeros para transferir el diseño?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on what time has done to this paper. I see the aged beige tone, the frayed and torn edges, the diagonal tear that cuts off the lower right, and the small brown spots on the fibrous surface. Set against a lighter cream mount, the gray graphite draws a large flower with an almost closed round bud, ruffled petals, and leaves shaded with fine parallel hatching. What matters most to me are the rows of small regular pinholes following petals, stems and leaves. That pricked tracing is the workshop mark, made to transfer the design by letting pigment pass through.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at these tiny holes as if they were constellations. They are not continuous lines, but rows of dots outlining ruffled petals, curving stems and elongated leaves. The large flower at the lower center, with its round bud, becomes a star chart arching toward the corners, with a second flower cut off by the edge on the right, beside a straight vertical line. I imagine the workshop in dim light, dusting pigment so the design would appear like stars on wood, copying the sky of rococo ornament.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This sheet looks like a little old broken treasure. The paper is cookie-colored with nibbled edges and a torn point at the bottom right. In the middle there is a big flower with a round bud tightly closed and petals that look like waves, with long stems climbing like slides and huge leaves sweeping the corner. The funniest part is that everything is made of tiny pinhole dots, not lines. On the right there is another flower chopped off by the edge. I want to blow shiny dust through the little holes to paint the flower somewhere else.

Count with your eyes: how many different flowers can you see, even though one is incomplete at the edge?

    HintPista

Look at the lower center and then search toward the right, where the edge cuts the drawing.

  2. #2

The outline of petals and stems is not a continuous line. What forms those dotted lines?

    HintPista

Look closely at the edges of the gray graphite and you will see regular little dots piercing the paper.

  3. #3

Look at the mount on which the beige fragment is placed. What light color is that smooth background?

    HintPista

It is much lighter and smoother than the aged fibrous paper on top.
