What you would seeLo que verías
The vessel stands alone, slightly turned, on a dark grey surface against an almost black background. It is a tall porcelain vase with a strikingly square body, nearly straight sides, clearly defined vertical corners, and a flat rectangular base. From the square shoulders rises a short cylindrical neck, ending in a flared, thin, almost white rim. The whole exterior is covered by a very glossy black ground, against which a dense enamel decoration stands out. In the foreground, at the bottom of each face, there are large rock forms in light, mottled green with brownish-purple edges. From behind them grow branches, slender stems, and small leaves in several shades of green. There are large flowers in cream, pale yellow, dusky pink, and deep purple—identified in general terms as peony- and chrysanthemum-like blossoms—together with tiny white flowers and light-colored butterflies with spread wings. One face shows a taller, twisted branch with a large cream flower near the top; the adjoining face is more crowded with smaller flowers and leaves. The light, soft and coming from the upper left, emphasizes the glassy sheen, the white rim, and the vertical edge that separates the two visible faces. No people, inscriptions, or marks can be seen at this angle; the scale is not given, so it reads as a medium-sized, elegant, symmetrical object.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First notice the dark ground and the sharp contrast of the greens, then move upward from the rocks at the base to the flowers and butterflies. Look at the corner of the square body: it organizes each face like a small vertical garden. Then examine the neck, where the same landscape continues on a much smaller scale.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this is a porcelain vessel from China, made during the Kangxi reign (1662–1722) of the Qing dynasty (1644–1911), by an unknown maker. It belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art, through the Elisabeth Severance Prentiss Collection. Its glossy black ground with enamels in green, aubergine, and pale tones relates it to what Western collecting has called 'famille noire,' within the broader 'famille verte' tradition of the period. The exact workshop, original owner, and original setting are not recorded in the source; it was probably a luxury object for display, collecting, or holding flowers, although its specific use cannot be confirmed.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual fact: although the vessel looks almost black in the photograph, the black is not empty background. It is an active, glossy surface that makes the tiny leaves and pale petals seem to glow as if lit at night.

If you get close to the shine you will see why this vase fascinates me. Its ground is a deep glazed black #0b0b0b that reflects light like a mirror, contrasting with the almost white rim at the mouth. Over that black, green, cream and purple enamels were fixed to form speckled rocks, large flowers and butterflies. I am interested in how the glaze covers even the sharp square edges without crazing, and how the light from the upper left reveals the thickness of the enamel on the leaves and petals. It is a very controlled technical achievement in Qing porcelain.

This square vase makes me think of a night sky. Its shiny black ground is like a moonless night, and over it flowers in cream, pale yellow and purple float like constellations. I imagine that whoever painted it in Kangxi times wanted to bring a garden into the darkness, with light green rocks below and butterflies with open wings above, as if migrating among stars. The shape is unusual for a vase, with straight shoulders and a cylindrical neck, so each face becomes a small nocturnal landscape to contemplate calmly.

It looks like a vase wearing night pajamas! It is square, not round, like a tall box with a little neck on top. Everything is shiny black and on top they painted lots of pretty flowers, some big cream ones and others pink and purple, with little green leaves and rocks. There are also tiny butterflies flying. If you turn it a little you see two sides at once and each side has different flowers. I like to imagine it is a little house for garden fairies who come out at night to play among the flowers.
