What you would seeLo que verías

The piece is a tall porcelain vase photographed in three-quarter view against an almost completely black background, over a dark gray surface with a soft shadow to the right. Its body is not round but square in section: it rises like an elongated prism with four flat faces, slightly tapering toward the base, and ends in broad shoulders from which a short, cylindrical neck emerges, topped by a thin, flat rim. White lines mark the corners, the base, and the mouth, creating a precise frame. Each face is covered with a glossy black ground on which flowering branches, leaves, rocks, birds, and butterflies stand out in greens, turquoise, white, cream, pink, mauve, yellow, and brown. In the foreground, one panel shows a gnarled tree with pale blossoms, a small green-and-yellow bird perched on a branch, and another in flight; below are porous, light-green rocks. The adjacent panel shows large peony-like flowers, dense foliage, and a butterfly near the top. The decoration continues over the shoulders and neck, where more blossoms and a tiny bird appear. The surface looks smooth and enameled, with reflections suggesting a glassy glaze, and the scale feels stately yet contained, like an object made to be observed slowly from all four sides.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the white edges and the silhouette, then let the black ground recede until the branches, rocks, and birds emerge. Move closer to one corner: seeing two panels at once turns a floral decoration into a small landscape that continues around the object.

Curious detailDato curioso

Despite its botanical abundance, not a single human figure appears: all the movement comes from birds, butterflies, twisted branches, and perforated rocks.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

If you look closely, your eye glides because the porcelain surface is covered in a very glossy enamel that catches the light. I focus on how difficult this was to achieve: a deep and even black background wrapping all four flat faces of the prism, with white lines precisely framing the corners, the base and the mouth. On that black, enamels in green, turquoise, cream, pink, mauve and yellow form flowers, leaves, porous rocks, birds and butterflies. Everything is sealed and smooth, as if the garden had been painted and then protected under a dark and luminous glass.

This vase reminds me of stargazing. Its glossy black background is like a moonless night and on it float pale blossoms, a small green and yellow bird perched on a gnarled branch and another in flight, plus a butterfly high among peonies. The tall square body, slightly narrower toward the base, with broad shoulders and a short cylindrical neck, feels like a small temple for viewing that nocturnal garden from all four sides. Each face is a different constellation of plants, rocks and birds that invites you to slowly walk around it, as if you were following stars.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a tall black box that holds a secret garden. It has four flat sides like tower walls and a little round neck on top. On one side I see a crooked tree with light flowers, two tiny birds one perched and one flying, and below some green stones with little holes. On the other side there are big pink flowers and a butterfly that looks like it is about to flutter. Everything shines as if it were wet. I want to walk around it many times to find more tiny animals hidden among the leaves.
