What you would seeLo que verías

Against a plain, soft gray background, a thin sheet of golden alloy glows with hues ranging from pale yellow to reddish copper and dark brown tarnish. The openwork piece is symmetrical, made of two sections joined at the center by a small bent wire hook. At the bottom, an oval ring, open at the top, frames where the mouth would be; its outer edge is scalloped with soft points and embossed with a continuous row of tiny raised dots following the curve. The central oval is empty. Above, two mirrored S-shaped hooks curve inward, and from each side four elongated extensions spread outward like fingers or whiskers. Each extension ends in a stylized serpent head, marked by two small embossed dots for eyes and a tapered snout. The surfaces show gentle wrinkles, slight folds and hammer marks, with a matte sheen and more reddish reflections along the upper curves. Seen frontally, the scale feels small and portable, designed to hang from the nasal septum and surround the mouth, light enough to move with the wearer.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the empty lower oval and its dotted, scalloped border, then move up to the central hook joining the halves. Linger on the eight serpent heads on the whiskers: reading them as hair, whisker and animal at once shifts the ornament from decoration to symbol.

ContextContexto

According to Cleveland Museum of Art data, this is a mouth mask from the Nasca culture of the south coast of Peru, dated 100 BCE–700 CE, made of hammered gold alloy sheet. Nasca figures depicted on pottery are shown wearing forehead and mouth ornaments like this. The mask hung from the nasal septum, the oval opening surrounded the mouth and the bristles were positioned as feline whiskers transformed into serpents. Both parts were cut from sheet gold and details were worked freehand while the sheet rested on a soft surface. The maker is unknown.

Curious detailDato curioso

Though it looks like one object, it is two sheets linked by a central wire, and all the raised dots and serpent features were hammered freehand without a mold, by pressing the sheet over a soft backing.

If you look closely you see hammer marks on this very thin sheet, its shine shifting from pale yellow to reddish copper to dark brown where it oxidized, with soft wrinkles and gentle folds that speak of age. I focus on the tiny raised dots lining the scalloped oval and forming each serpent eyes, all worked freehand on a soft support. It amazes me that two delicate sections still hang together by a small central hook after centuries of once framing a mouth and hanging from the nose.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As a sky watcher I think how the Nasca of Peru south coast looked up and down at once, between desert, night and ritual. This hammered gold mouth mask, dated between 100 BCE and 700 CE, framed the mouth and hung from the nasal septum with its S shaped hook. Its eight whiskers ending in serpent heads remind me of constellations unfolding with perfect symmetry. Picturing it gleaming under desert sun speaks of power and a worldview that joined feline, serpent and human in one shining adornment.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a golden cat face with no face, just a big empty mouth with little points around it like a crown. On top it has two little hooks to hang from the nose, so funny and a bit creepy! Eight long whiskers stick out from the sides and each one ends in a tiny snake head with two dot eyes that shine. I imagine the little snakes wiggled when someone walked. It is small, golden and shiny even though it has brownish patches from age.

It is not the pale yellow of shiny gold, but the dark tone seen on the upper curves.
