What you would seeLo que verías

This is a black-ink woodcut on warm, cream-colored paper, enclosed by a thick, slightly irregular black border. In the lower center, a slim young man with dark hair, a pale profile, a shirt, tie, and a jacket patterned with fine white lines kneels or is forced down on a cobbled street, his hands clasped low and his gaze turned toward his captors. From the left, a dense mass of men in black coats and hats presses against him; one extends an arm and grips him by the neck or collar, while others lean in with mustached, caricature-like faces, hands clasped, swords visible at their sides. On the right, two broad uniformed policemen in pale double-breasted tunics, belts, buttons, kepis, and heavy mustaches advance with legs apart and arms stiff. The cobblestones are large white rectangles outlined in black, receding diagonally. Behind them is a pale sidewalk, a dark tree trunk, and a row of shops with cropped signs reading “ETERIE,” “ODES,” “VINS LIQUEURS,” and fragments of advertisements. Two shadowy onlookers stand in a doorway. At bottom right, inside the image, block letters read “L’ANARCHISTE.” The artist’s pencil signature appears below, outside the border. The carving is rough and flat, with almost no gray tones.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the trapped young figure at the center and the hand gripping his neck, then move outward to the dark cluster pressing in from the left. Next, compare him with the two pale, heavyset policemen approaching from the right. Notice how the cropped shop signs and the cobblestones tilted toward us make the whole street feel like a stage with no way out.

ContextContexto

The Anarchist is an 1892 woodcut by Félix Vallotton (1865–1925), a Swiss-French artist active in Paris, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art, which holds this impression. Vallotton helped revive the woodcut as a modern, expressive medium in the 1890s, using stark black-and-white contrasts rather than detailed modelling. In France at that time, anarchism, police surveillance, and fears of political violence were frequent subjects in newspapers and prints. It is not known whether this scene shows a specific arrest or a real person; it probably presents a recognizable urban type and a topical confrontation rather than a documented event.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although carved and printed with deliberate roughness, the image relies almost entirely on solid black shapes for the civilian crowd and white shapes for the uniformed police, so the conflict can be understood at a glance, even from across a room.

I pause at the thick black border and how it reveals the warm cream paper, that soft tone that tempers the extreme contrast of black and white. The carving is rough and flat, almost without grays, pure black and white with fine white lines for the young man's jacket. I notice how ink covers the dark areas of coats and hats, while the cobblestones remain reserved in white with black outlines. At the lower right inside the image you can read L'ANARCHISTE.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this cobbled street as an inverted night sky. The white rectangles of the pavement recede diagonally like an orderly constellation, while the dark mass of the crowd on the left is a compact shadow pushing forward. The two policemen on the right, with their light double-breasted uniforms, look like two pale moons breaking in. It is 1892 and Vallotton works only with stark black and white, without grays, as if viewing the world through an old telescope that only tells light from darkness.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

The young man in the middle is kneeling on the ground and it makes me a bit sad because everyone is piling on him. I see a bunch of men with black hats and mustaches grabbing him, and two big policemen with kepis and buttons coming from the other side. The ground is made of little white stones like lego bricks. Behind there are little shops with signs that say ETERIE and VINS LIQUEURS and a skinny little tree. Everything is black and white, with no pretty colors.

  1. #1

On the white cobbled street, how many figures in light uniforms and kepis advance toward the young man from the right?

    HintPista

Look at the right side of the image, they are broad, with double buttons and mustaches.

  2. #2

What word in capital letters can be read inside the image, at the lower right, over the cobblestones?

    HintPista

It is the title of the print in French and it is written right above the light stones.

  3. #3

In the background, what dark natural element appears between the sidewalk and the shop signs?

    HintPista

It is a dark thin trunk rising vertically behind the crowd.
