What you would seeLo que verías

The image reproduces a full newspaper page, aged and beige, creased and slightly uneven at the edges. Across the top it reads 'ACTUALITÉS' and the number '98'. In the centre, inside a thin frame, is the lithograph printed in black and grey on a near-blank background, cut only by a horizontal line for the ground and shading beneath the figures. Four caricatured men occupy almost the entire width. In the middle, a dishevelled man with messy hair, a grimacing face and a long, emaciated body stretched horizontally, is being pulled apart. To the left, two men in frock coats and tall top hats grip one of his arms and his torso. To the right, a third man pulls his other arm with both hands and leans back. The victim's mouth is twisted, his fingers splayed and tense, and his bare legs buckle. A dark bucket or basin, like a chamber pot, lies overturned at his feet. The drawing mixes fine strokes, deep shadows and coarse scribbles on faces and hands. Below the image, the title 'L'ÉCARTÈLEMENT RÉTABLI' and the caption appear in capitals, and underneath that, three dense columns of small French text, along with handwritten notes in pencil in the right margin.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First, stand in front of the central figure's face and follow the horizontal pull of his body towards both edges. Then count the pullers: there are three, not four, and all wear the same bourgeois uniform of frock coat and top hat. Note, finally, that while their faces differ, their determination is identical.

ContextContexto

Published in the satirical newspaper Le Charivari on May 8, 1869, as plate 98 of the News of the Day series, this lithograph by Honoré Daumier (1808-1879) transforms a political commentary into an image of torture. The title, L'écartèlement rétabli ('Quartering Reinstated'), and the caption — 'His vote for me! For me! For me!' — suggest a dispute between parties or candidates seeking to appropriate a voter or his vote. The specific identity of the figures does not appear in the museum record, so any precise identification would be speculative. Daumier was one of the best-known caricaturists in nineteenth-century France, and the Parisian press was his main arena.

¡A mí!

Curious detailDato curioso

Despite the title referring to quartering, traditionally executed by pulling in four directions, Daumier draws only three men in dispute: the fourth force is missing, and the voter ends up torn horizontally, like a rope in a tug-of-war.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Is this voter a passive victim or a valuable prize, and how does that distinction change the satire?¿Este elector es una víctima pasiva o un botín valioso, y cómo cambia la sátira según lo veamos de un modo o de otro?
  2. Why choose an ancien régime form of torture to talk about voting in 1869?¿Por qué elegir una tortura del Antiguo Régimen para hablar del voto en 1869?
  3. Who is absent from the scene, and how might their absence be part of the critique?¿Quién no aparece en la escena, y cómo podría ser su ausencia parte de la crítica?

The conservatorLa restauradora

Look at the paper before the drawing: it is a full newspaper page, yellowed and beige, with creases and slightly irregular edges that show its age. At the top it says «ACTUALITÉS» and number «98». In the center, inside a thin frame, the lithograph in black and grays leaves a lot of empty space, with only a ground line and soft shadows. I focus on the linework: fine lines for the top hats and frock coats, dense shading and rough scribbles on hands and faces. Below the title in capitals and three dense columns of small text, with pencil handwritten notes in the right margin left by someone.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This scene reminds me of opposing forces pulling on the same body, like gravity in opposite directions. Four men fill almost the full width: three in frock coats and top hats pull hard, two on the left and one on the right leaning back with his weight. In the middle, the man stretched horizontally, almost skeletal, with messy hair and a twisted mouth, seems to orbit with no escape. At his feet there is a dark overturned vessel, like a bucket. The caption shouts the explanation: «My vote! Mine! Mine!» A dispute that stretches him to the breaking point.

¡A mí! ¡A mí!» Una disputa que lo estira hasta romperlo.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

Ouch! It feels uncomfortable to see it because they are pulling him so hard by both arms and it looks like he will stretch like bubblegum. There are four men in total, three with tall top hats and long coats, and the one in the middle who is barefoot, with twisted legs and open hands. He has a face of pain and really messy hair. On the floor there is a fallen bucket. The sheet looks old and yellowish, and at the top it says «ACTUALITÉS» and «98». Below there are many tiny letters in French and a big title that says he is being quartered over a vote.

¡Ay!
