knotted pile, silk and wool
What you would seeLo que verías
A vertical rectangular pile tapestry with a heavily ornamented border and a soft, velvety texture typical of knotted wool and silk. The central field is a warm ivory-gold, framed by a narrow border in muted teal-green and gilt gold. At the top center sits a double coat of arms beneath a coronet, divided with blue-and-white checks and golden stripes, surrounded by scrolling gilt foliage, grape clusters and floral garlands. Directly below, a small oval medallion with a gilt frame holds a parrot with reddish breast and greenish wings perched on a bar. Flanking the field are stylized columns and trellises entwined with vines. In the lower center, a large classical urn on a pedestal overflows with autumn abundance — flowers, grapes, peaches and gourds. At its base, two spotted felines, resembling leopards or cheetahs, recline beside wicker baskets brimming with fruit. Leaning against the sides are farming and hunting implements — a shovel, a rake and baskets — with small hares tucked nearby. The overall palette is warm ochres, golds and greens with touches of sky blue and white, with a subtle silk sheen and dense, plush pile.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the parrot inside the central oval, then move up to the crowned double shield that signals its aristocratic commission. Follow the overflowing urn downward to the reclining felines and fruit baskets at the base, where autumnal plenty feels most tactile. Notice the small hanging grape bunches and farm tools that frame the allegory.
ContextContexto
According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, this panel is one of a set of four Seasons tapestries made around 1717 at the Chaillot workshops of the Royal Savonnerie Manufactory in France, established in the early 1600s. Savonnerie supplied knotted-pile furnishings for royal palaces and diplomatic gifts, and courtiers often commissioned works from the same state manufactories to emulate the king. The double coat of arms suggests it was made for a count and countess who married in 1717. It represents autumn through an abundant harvest. Cleveland rotates this panel with another from the group, while the other two are held by the Toledo Museum of Art.

Curious detailDato curioso
Although now displayed as wall hangings, Savonnerie panels were knotted-pile carpets in silk and wool, so luxurious that they were reserved for royal interiors and prized diplomatic gifts.

The conservatorLa restauradora
I focus on the velvety knotted wool and silk that creates that soft surface with a subtle sheen. Look at the gilded border with scrolls, the narrow edging in bluish green and gold that frames the background in a gilded ivory tone. The warm ochres and golds combine with touches of blue and white from the crest. To preserve it we care for the fiber, the color and the tension of the vertical tapestry, made in the Chaillot workshops of the Savonnerie Manufactory around 1717 for royal palaces.

Like a woven calendar, this Autumn marks the passage of the year. At the top the double crowned shield with blue and white bands and golden stripes looks like a heraldic constellation fixing a date: the 1717 marriage. Below, the urn overflowing with grapes, peaches and pumpkins celebrates the harvest, the moment when light wanes. The golden and ochre tones evoke the low light of the equinox, part of a series of four seasons.

There are so many hidden things to find! At the top there is a shield with a crown and lots of grapes around it. In the middle, inside a golden oval, there is a parrot with a reddish chest and green wings perched on its stick. Below a giant urn is full of flowers and autumn fruits. At its feet two big spotty kitties like leopards are lying next to baskets full of fruit. And on the sides there are shovels, rakes and even tiny bunnies.
