What you would seeLo que verías

A black-and-white etching with dense, energetic linework, centered on a stocky man in profile holding a tall vertical pole topped by a large cylindrical cage or basket from which several dead rats hang by their tails; another rat perches on top of the basket. The man wears a tall soft cap, a heavy worn coat with rough fur draped over the shoulders, baggy breeches and scuffed boots, with a long knife sheathed at his waist. His outstretched hand suggests bargaining or asking for payment. Beside him, a small child holds a bowl or container with both hands. In the arched doorway of a rustic timber house to the left, a bearded older man with a wrapped cap leans out and extends his hand in response, as if in exchange. The setting includes in the left foreground a gnarled tree stump and a wooden barrel, and to the right an open landscape with thatched cottages, loosely sketched trees with dense foliage, and a pale sky left as blank paper. Light is strongly contrasted, with shadows built through cross-hatching that gives tactile quality to fur, wood grain and fabric folds, and the overall scale is intimate, like a street vignette captured up close.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the pole and the hanging rats that anchor the vertical axis of the image. Then follow the nearly touching hands of the three figures, caught in a quiet transaction. Finally notice the textures: the fur on the coat, the splintered wood of the doorway, and the loose, airy hatching of the distant foliage.

ContextContexto

This work is The Rat Catcher, an etching by Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn, 1606 to 1669, dated 1632 according to the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it is housed. It is classified as a Print in the Prints department and its medium is etching, a technique Rembrandt explored extensively for genre subjects and studies of ordinary people. The itinerant rat catcher was a familiar figure in seventeenth-century Netherlandish visual culture, reflecting an interest in everyday street life. The signature and date appear on the plate at lower right. No further description is provided in the source record.

Curious detailDato curioso

Rembrandt etched this plate at about age 26, already demonstrating his mastery of light and shadow through intricate networks of cross-hatching, achieving depth and atmosphere using only black ink on light paper.

The conservatorLa restauradora

From a conservation point of view I look at this print and think about the plate work. The line is dense and nervous, with cross-hatching that builds deep shadows on the worn coat, on the wooden barrel and on the gnarled stump. Light is left in reserve on the pale sky and makes the vertical staff and the cylindrical basket with rats hanging by their tails stand out. I am intrigued by the signature and the date 1632 at the lower right, etched finely, and by how the intense black contrasts with the warm paper tone.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As a sky watcher I notice how Rembrandt uses light as if it were an observed phenomenon. The background leaves the sky blank, with no line work, like a luminous clearing above the thatched cottages and sketchy trees. In the foreground everything is shadow and texture, with the sturdy man in profile silhouetted and his staff pointing upward like an axis. That vertical pole reminds me of a measuring instrument. The contrast between the dark zone of the exchange and the bright distance creates depth, almost like looking from night toward dawn.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

Eww, there are rats hanging from the basket by their little tails! The man carries them on a very tall pole as if they were trophies and another little rat is on top of the basket. The man wears a floppy hat, a furry coat and really worn-out boots, and he has a big knife at his waist. Next to him a boy holds a little bowl with both hands and a bearded grandpa leans out of an arched doorway to give him something. In the back there are straw houses, a barrel and a crooked stump. Everything is in black and white.
