What you would seeLo que verías

A small circular black-and-white engraving printed on aged, slightly textured paper with uneven edges. In the foreground, a nude woman sits on a tasseled cushion, her legs extended and crossed over an ornate ledge. She is shown three-quarter view, torso facing forward, head turned slightly to the side, hair curled and piled into a high bun with loose ringlets falling at the nape. Her right hand holds a small harp with elegant scrolled ends and taut parallel strings. Fine cross-hatching models the soft volume of her belly, thighs, breasts and arms, while dense networks of lines create deep shadows behind her. In the darkened background to the left, a second string instrument resembling a viol or early violin leans against a wall rendered with tight hatching. The composition is enclosed in a decorative roundel: a scrolled cartouche at the top, foliate volutes along the sides, and a small plaque at the bottom inscribed with 1544 and a monogram. The engraving technique is highly precise, with sharp contrasts between bright highlights on skin and the velvety black of the interior.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the harp and the curve of the figure's arm, then follow the engraved lines that shape light across her body. Notice the second instrument resting in shadow and the ornamental border that frames the whole scene like a medallion, shifting it from portrait to allegory.

ContextContexto

According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is The Harpist, an engraving dated 1544 by Georg Pencz, c. 1500–1550, a German artist of the Renaissance period. Pencz was associated with the so-called Little Masters of Nuremberg, known for small-scale, finely detailed prints. The work is classified as a Print in the Prints department and belongs to the Mr. and Mrs. Lewis B. Williams Collection. No extended curatorial description is provided in the source, but the inscribed date and engraving technique are typical of Pencz's mid-sixteenth-century production in Germany.

Curious detailDato curioso

Georg Pencz trained in Albrecht Dürer's circle in Nuremberg and became noted for tiny, collectible engravings that circulated widely across Europe in the early age of print.

I focus on how this circular print from 1544 was made. It is an engraving on copper and you can see it in every precise line that models light on skin. The paper has irregular edges and aged tones ranging from deep black to pale beige like old ivory. Look at the cross-hatching that creates soft shadows on belly and thighs, and the ornate frame with a rolled scroll at the top, scrollwork at the sides and a cartouche below with the date and the monogram. Everything reveals the meticulous work typical of the Little Masters of Nuremberg.

This tondo reminds me of looking through an old telescope, a perfect circle isolating a luminous figure against darkness. The woman holds a small harp with a curved frame, scroll ends and visible strings, lit like a constellation. In the background, in shadow, another string instrument rests against a hatched wall. The engraving plays with light and shadow like a night sky: intense blacks and middle grays that make the body glow in the foreground. The date 1544 below anchors this intimate universe in time, like logging an observation.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like she is inside a round bubble! The woman is sitting on a cushion with a tassel, with her legs stretched and crossed, and she is holding a tiny harp with lots of little threads for strings. Her hair is tied up in a high bun and she looks to the side very calmly. I like to hunt for details: the fluffy cushion, the other instrument hidden behind in the darkness and the frame with fairytale-like ornaments. At the bottom there is a little label that says 1544. Everything is made only with little black lines that make her skin look soft and shiny.
