What you would seeLo que verías

Centered against a smooth, flat gray background hangs a small, nearly square purse, photographed front-on and slightly flattened, as if suspended for study. A thin twisted cord in dull gold rises from its upper corners and forms a loop, tied in a small tight knot at the top. At each top corner sits a dark, intricate knot, now blackened. Below, the body of the bag is densely covered with scrolling stems in tarnished gold that coil into round compartments, each holding a flower or fruit. Muted reds and pinks, sage and olive greens, dusty blue and ochre stand out against a dark, grainy ground. The surface looks rough and fibrous, with fine individual stitches and areas where the metallic thread has darkened almost to black. Near the top edge, pinkish drawstrings run across and emerge at the sides, ending in elongated, embroidered tassel heads in green, pink and gold, with small frayed threads and dark beads hanging below. Three similar small ornaments dangle, worn and incomplete, along the bottom edge. The edges are uneven and a little frayed, the corners softened, giving the object an aged, fragile, handmade feel at a small, intimate scale.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the overall coiling pattern, then look for each flower tucked inside its own scroll. Next, look at the edges: the drawstrings, the tassels and the little knots at the bottom show how it closed and hung. The shine you might expect from silver is now darkened, and that change alters the whole reading of the piece.

ContextContexto

This is an English purse from the early 1600s, by an unknown maker, now in the Cleveland Museum of Art. According to researcher Jacqui Carey, cited by the museum, its scale and construction are typical of a 'sweet bag', a container for sweet-smelling substances. The term was popularized by George Wingfield Digby in a 1963 publication on Elizabethan embroidery for small English purses of the 1500s and 1600s. It is worked in silk and silver filé on linen; the handle and the lining are probably later replacements. Its nine floral motifs were identified in the source as carnation, borage, rose, columbine, honeysuckle, grapes, rose, pansy and thistle.

Curious detailDato curioso

In places the inked design can still be seen on the linen beneath the embroidery, and the background stitches lie horizontally rather than vertically, which the museum describes as unusual.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause at how fragile this small English bag from the early seventeenth century feels. It is embroidered in silk and silver thread on linen, visible in the dark granular ground and in how the metal has tarnished to almost black on the knots and stems. The golden cord handle and the lining are later replacements, so they are not original. I see fine stitching, frayed edges and unravelled tassels with tiny dark beads. It is a sweet bag, made to hold pleasant scents. Every worn area speaks of its age and intimate use.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

Suspended against the smooth grey, this purse looks like a small domestic constellation. The coiled golden stems form closed orbits and inside each one floats a vegetal star, nine in total, like planets in an intimate system. Among them, according to the record, are carnation, borage, rose, columbine, honeysuckle, grapes, pansy and thistle, with rose appearing twice. The muted colours, reds, sage greens, dusty blue and ochre, glow like ancient lights on a dark ground. The pink drawstrings and three lower tassels are like comet tails still hanging.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a tiny fluffy treasure bag. It has a golden handle like a little twisted tail and a tight knot on top. It is full of colourful little flowers trapped inside shiny thread circles. I see red, pink, green and light blue on a dark scratchy background. Pink cords come out from the sides with tassels that look like little brushes with loose threads and black beads. Three more little ornaments hang below, a bit broken. I imagine it kept nice smells inside, like flower perfume to smell pretty.
