The Saint-Jacques Tower in Paris, by Victor CoindreLa Torre Saint-Jacques en París, de Victor Coindre
Victor Coindre (French) · c. 1838–82 · France, 19th century
lithograph
What you would seeLo que verías
The lithograph presents the solitary Saint-Jacques Tower centered vertically against a cloudy, atmospheric sky. It is a tall, square-plan Gothic tower rendered in granular black and gray tones that suggest weathered stone. Four distinct stories are visible, marked by pointed arches, flamboyant tracery, ornate buttresses, pinnacles and sculpted niches. At ground level, two large pointed arch openings and a balustraded terrace with a small staircase anchor the structure. Higher up, statues fill canopied niches, grotesque gargoyles project from the corners, and the flat roof is edged with an openwork parapet and crowned by a standing figure. The printmaking technique creates velvety shadows and fine hatching that emphasizes the depth of the carving. In the foreground, at a tiny scale, a park with scattered trees, dirt paths and low vegetation spreads around the base, where small groups of 19th-century figures in long dresses and top hats stroll, gather and play. In the background to the left and right, rows of Parisian apartment buildings with many windows fade into the hazy light. The upper left corner bears the inscription «Souvenirs d'Artistes» and the upper right shows the number 60.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the full silhouette of the tower and follow it from base to summit statue. Then shift focus to the tiny park and notice how the small figures emphasize the monument's height. Look for the gargoyles and delicate stone tracery that give the tower its dramatic character.
ContextContexto
This is a lithograph titled La Tour St. Jacques by Victor Coindre, a French artist of the 19th century, dated broadly to about 1838–82 according to the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it is held in the Prints department. The subject is the Tour Saint-Jacques, the surviving bell tower of the former Church of Saint-Jacques-de-la-Boucherie in Paris, built between 1509 and 1523 in the Flamboyant Gothic style. The church was demolished during the French Revolution, leaving the tower as an isolated landmark that became an icon of historic Paris. The print reflects the 19th-century romantic taste for detailed urban views and medieval architecture.

Curious detailDato curioso
The figure on top is a 19th-century addition depicting Saint James the Greater; the tower itself was restored between 1854 and 1858 by architect Théodore Ballu, around the time such souvenir lithographs were widely circulated.

What holds my attention is the matter of the lithograph. That characteristic grain and the contrast between deep black #2b2b2b and light gray #d6d3c9 make the stone seem to breathe. I look at the pointed arches, the flamboyant tracery and the gargoyles on the corners and I see how the artist used light to model each pinnacle. It is meticulous work that celebrates the texture of the Gothic style and at the same time reveals the wear of time on the surface.

I always look at the sky first and here it dominates the background, filled with dense clouds that wrap around the tower like an atmosphere. The Saint-Jacques tower rises vertically, square and silhouetted against that diffuse light, reaching for height as if it wanted to touch the clouds. I like to imagine that upper platform with its crowning statue was an observatory to measure the Parisian horizon. The contrast between the stone and the cloudy sky turns the monument into a needle between earth and air.

That tower is huge! It looks like a castle with lots of decorations and little monsters on the corners that are the gargoyles. At the top there is a tiny little person standing and looking at everything. Down below, in the park, people look like little ants with long dresses and hats strolling among the trees. It makes me laugh that the tower is so enormous and the people are so tiny. It seems like if I stretch my hand I could touch the clouds behind it.
