The Little ExecutionerEl pequeño verdugo (The Little Executioner)
Prince Ruprecht (German, 1619–1682); Jusepe de Ribera (Spanish, 1591–1652) · 1662 · Germany
mezzotint
What you would seeLo que verías
A mezzotint portrait in tight right-facing profile fills the frame. A bearded man with a short, dense beard, strong nose and pronounced cheekbone looks out to the right, beyond the edge. He wears a light-colored turban of wrinkled cloth wrapped in several overlapping folds, with a small knotted bun at the back and a frayed edge resting on the forehead. Light from the left sculpts the face in stark chiaroscuro: cheek, ear, wrinkles of skin and folds of fabric glow in ivory and pearl gray, while beard, neck and background dissolve into velvety blacks and smoky grays characteristic of mezzotint. The background is dark and empty, almost solid black on the right, more mottled on the left. In the foreground, a dark garment with a broad collar and glossy folds, suggesting thick cloth or leather, covers the shoulder. Texture is granular yet soft, without sharp outlines, built from continuous tonal gradations rather than lines. In the upper right, a very faint monogram or mark appears against the deepest shadow. The scale feels intimate and monumental at once, like a cropped bust.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the lit profile, then linger on the turban’s fabric where the mezzotint grain is most visible. Notice how the dark ground wraps the figure without a hard outline and how the highlight on the cheek leads the eye. Finally look for the small knot at the back of the turban — a quiet, everyday detail that complicates the stern title.
ContextContexto
Dated 1662 and credited to Prince Ruprecht of the Rhine (1619–1682), nephew of King Charles I of England, after a painting then thought to be by Jusepe de Ribera (1591–1652). According to Cleveland Museum of Art data, Ruprecht was among the earliest practitioners of mezzotint, a technique first used in Germany in the 1600s. He is credited with bringing it to England around 1660 and introducing it to John Evelyn, who was writing a book on the history of printmaking. This print was made to illustrate the mezzotint process in Evelyn’s book and is considered the first mezzotint printed in England. The museum holds it as a Gift of The Print Club of Cleveland.

Curious detailDato curioso
Mezzotint is made by smoothing a roughened plate to create tones from dark to light, which is why it was historically called the «black manner» — a quality evident in the deep blacks behind the figure.

I focus on how this 1662 image is made. It is a mezzotint, and you can see it in that velvety black background and in how light slides across the cheek and the folds of the turban without a single hard line. Everything is a soft transition between ivory, pearl grey and smoky darkness. The wrinkled turban and the frayed edge over the forehead show control of tone. It is a technique that lives on contrast to sculpt the face.

I see it like a close eclipse. The background is a starless night sky, deep black on the right and mottled on the left, and the face emerges lit from the left like a quarter moon. The pale turban reflects light like a coiled nebula, each wrap marking shadow and shine. The prominent nose and cheekbone are soft craters shaped by chiaroscuro. The whole portrait seems to float in darkness, intimate and at once immense.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
He is a man in profile who looks very close, like someone took his picture from the side. He has a beard, a little shiny ear and a wrinkly white turban with a small bun at the back. His clothes are dark and shiny, like a superhero costume. Half his face is lit and the other half is almost in shadow. The background is super black, so it looks like he is just floating there. I like that he looks serious and mysterious at the same time.
