What you would seeLo que verías

A single flat figurine in dull gold stands vertically at the center, photographed against a smooth background that shifts from dark charcoal at the top to pale gray below. A soft shadow falls to its right. At the top is a wide, rectangular, flat headdress with straight edges, divided by incised horizontal and vertical lines and pierced along both sides by small triangular openings. A tiny loop or remnant rises from its upper edge. Below it, the face is an elongated, tapering triangle: two horizontal oval eyes in low relief, a thin straight nose, and a small open oval mouth. Small rings project like earrings on both sides. The torso widens into an inverted triangle with broad, pointed shoulders and a narrow waist. Across the chest, two long objects cross in an X, covered in short hatched strokes; near the center are tiny hand-like or fan-shaped ends, a U-shaped pendant at the neck, and small oval marks near the lower torso. The lower body narrows into two legs joined at the feet, enclosing a large empty triangular space between them. The surface is matte, grainy, and pitted, with uneven edges and no polished shine.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the face: geometric, impassive, and built from only a few raised lines. Then follow the X across the chest and look for the hands, the necklace, and the small marks that suggest dress or carried objects. Finally, examine the matte roughness and irregular edges — what might look like imperfections are central to understanding the object.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a tunjo, a votive figurine in the Muisca style from Colombia, dated to about 900–1550 and made by an unknown maker in cast gold. Unlike other gold ornaments from the Isthmian region, tunjos were not worn. They were offerings deposited in sacred places such as lagoons and caves, and they often depict people holding something. Because they were not made for display, they were left unfinished after lost-wax casting: flaws were not corrected, surfaces were not polished, and excess metal from the pouring channel could remain. The exact findspot of this piece and the identity of the figure are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

Its beauty is intentionally unfinished: after lost-wax casting, the surface was not polished or corrected, so the dull, grainy texture we see today is part of how the offering was left.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What changes when an object made of gold is created not to be seen, but to be deposited and hidden?¿Qué cambia cuando un objeto de oro se crea no para ser visto, sino para ser depositado y ocultado?
  2. Does the unfinished surface make the figure feel more distant, or more intimate and handmade?¿La superficie inacabada hace que la figura se sienta más lejana, o más íntima y hecha a mano?
  3. What might the crossed objects and the empty triangle between the legs be meant to communicate to someone who cannot ask the maker?¿Qué podrían comunicar los objetos cruzados y el triángulo vacío entre las piernas a quien ya no puede preguntarle a su creador?

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I pause at what others might see as a flaw. This matte, grainy surface full of tiny pits is not carelessness, it is ritual intent. Left unpolished and uncorrected after lost-wax casting, the gold keeps irregular edges and that tiny leftover bit of metal on top where the pouring channel was. I am moved by its unfinished solemnity: an object made to be offered in a lagoon or cave, not to be worn, where the trace of its making remains visible forever.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

Through my eyes, this figurine looks like a small portable cosmos. The broad rectangular headdress on top reminds me of a horizon, with its triangular perforations like cut-out stars. The long triangular face and oval eyes give it the stillness of an observer. The X-shaped objects crossed over the chest could be staffs of office or instruments. And that large triangular void between the joined legs is like an eclipse, a negative space that balances the opaque gleam of gold with the darkness of the background.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a little golden person standing very seriously trying to keep balance. It has a huge head with a square hat like a robot, with two little triangle-shaped holes on the sides. Its face is a triangle with oval eyes and a surprised mouth. It wears round earrings and on its chest it has two little sticks crossed like a giant X. Its legs are stuck together and leave a big triangle-shaped hole in the middle. I like that it shines just a little, as if it were made of golden playdough.

  1. #1

Look at the headdress: how many small triangular openings are pierced, one on each side?

    HintPista

Look at the wide rectangle above the head, near the side edges.

  2. #2

On the figure's chest, what shape do the two long crossed objects form?

    HintPista

Imagine two little sticks crossed at the center of the torso.

  3. #3

Between the two joined legs, what shape is the large empty space they enclose?

    HintPista

It is the same elongated shape as the face, but empty and at the bottom.
