What you would seeLo que verías

A tall, flat gold figurine stands centered against a soft gray gradient, photographed frontally in vertical orientation. The silhouette is highly stylized and symmetrical, with an oversized head and long, narrow legs that create a small triangular void between them, suggesting a modest scale of only a few centimeters. In the foreground the metal surface appears rough and granular, with raised wire-like lines outlining the body and facial features. The head wears a broad rectangular headdress with a crosshatched diamond pattern and three short prongs at the top center like a crest, while small spirals at the temples suggest ear ornaments. The face is schematic, with elongated slit eyes, a straight nose and a small mouth. The torso is a rectangular plaque dominated by a smaller figure in relief hanging from the chest, held by the larger figure’s hands; that inner figure also has a headdress and fringed skirt. The main figure wears a short fringed kilt marked by vertical strands and a twisted rope belt at the waist. The color is a muted, unpolished yellow-gold with brownish shadows, revealing casting flaws, excess beads and uneven textures from lost-wax process.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the overall flat, elongated outline, then focus on the geometric headdress and the serene schematic face. Notice the second, smaller figure suspended on the chest and how that doubling transforms a simple figurine into a carrier of an offering.

ContextContexto

According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, this is a tunjo, a votive offering figurine in Muisca style made between about 900 and 1550 CE in what is now Colombia, cast in gold using the lost-wax technique. Unlike other gold ornaments from the Isthmian region, tunjos were not worn but deposited as offerings in sacred places such as lagoons and caves. They often depict humans holding something. Perhaps because they were not meant for display, they were frequently left unfinished after casting, with flaws uncorrected, surfaces unpolished and remains of the pouring channel left in place. The Muisca culture flourished on the high plateau of the eastern Andes and is renowned for votive goldwork. The specific maker is unknown.

Curious detailDato curioso

Unlike many highly polished pre-Hispanic gold jewels, tunjos often retain rough casting surfaces and leftover casting sprues because their purpose was ritual deposition, not public display.

I focus on the surface because the technical story is there. I see an opaque yellowish gold with brownish shadows and a rough porous texture. You can notice burrs and granulation from lost wax casting. The raised threads that form the diamond patterned headdress, the spiral ear ornaments and the fringed small skirt were never polished smooth afterwards. That lack of finishing is not carelessness, it is intentional for a votive purpose, the piece was not made to be worn but to be offered in a lagoon or cave between 900 and 1550 CE.

This figure makes me think of constellations. It is symmetrical, elongated, flat and frontal, like a cutout from the night sky. Its rectangular headdress with three central points looks like a crown of stars. On its chest it carries a smaller figure hanging down, like a reflection or a satellite orbiting close to the torso. The narrow legs leave a triangular void, a small eclipse of light. It is not jewelry for the body, it is a message launched toward the sacred, to caves and lagoons, where gold does not shine for humans.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a little gold doll in costume! It has a big head with a checkered hat and three little points on top, like a crown. On its ears it wears two shiny little snails. The funniest part is that it is holding another tiny doll on its belly, gripping it with its hands. It wears a little skirt with fringe like rag strips. Its eyes are closed as if it were sleeping and its legs leave a small triangle in the middle. It feels rough and does not shine much, as if it were made in a hurry.

  1. #1

Counting the vertical points crowning the headdress at the top center, how many are there?

    HintPista

Look at the top edge of the rectangular headdress, right at the center of the head.

  2. #2

What geometric shape is formed by the empty space between the two straight narrow legs of the figure?

    HintPista

Observe the lower silhouette, between one leg and the other.

  3. #3

On the chest of the main figure, what is it holding with its hands?

    HintPista

Look for a rectangular torso with an inner relief that also wears a headdress.
