drypoint and aquatint
What you would seeLo que verías
A print in sepia and black on cream paper, in horizontal format with slightly rounded plate marks and a light margin around the image. At center right a low, grassy islet or peninsula rises gently, covered with brush and topped by a cluster of five or six tall trees. Their canopies are rendered with dense, velvety, almost black strokes, while the thin, bare trunks let the sky show through between them. In the foreground, calm water fills the lower half of the composition and mirrors the trees with trembling vertical lines and dark patches, like a mirror broken by faint ripples. To the left, the landscape opens into a bright, hazy background with low vegetation and softened contours suggesting a distant shore. The sky, occupying the upper left half, is nearly empty, with fine crosshatching and pale washes that hint at clouds and diffused light. The texture is characteristic of drypoint and aquatint: rough etched lines, granular tonal areas, and soft contrasts between light and shadow. Below the image, outside the plate, a pencil inscription gives the title on the left and the artist signature on the right. The scale is intimate, as if viewed in silence from the opposite bank.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the dark tree cluster on the right, then follow its reflection down into the water. Notice how the left half remains bright and almost empty, making the island seem to float. Look closely at the fine lines in the sky and their contrast with the dense black of the canopies.
ContextContexto
This work is titled The Island by Charles William Dahlgreen (American, 1864–1955), dated 1922 according to Cleveland Museum of Art records, where it is held in the prints collection as a gift of Leonard C. Hanna Jr. The technique is listed as drypoint and aquatint, intaglio printmaking methods that allow rich, velvety lines through direct scratching of the plate and tonal areas created with resin. The print belongs to early 20th-century American landscape printmaking, when many artists explored atmospheric and light effects in quiet natural scenes. The exact location depicted is not documented; it is probably an evocative landscape rather than a specific topographic view, focused on reflection and stillness.

Curious detailDato curioso
Drypoint leaves a burr on the plate that holds extra ink and creates the soft, velvety dark line visible in the treetops and reflections, an effect highly prized by landscape printmakers of that period.

The conservatorLa restauradora
I focus on how this horizontal print in sepia and black on cream paper was made. As a conservator I look at the slightly rounded plate edges and the granular texture of aquatint alongside the rough lines of drypoint. The almost black, velvety treetops contrast with the slender trunks and the empty sky made of fine strokes. The water with its trembling reflection shows dark patches and soft lights. Everything speaks of an intimate and controlled work from 1922.

As a sky watcher I am drawn to that great luminous emptiness filling the upper left half. There are no stars or moon, just fine crosshatched lines and pale washes suggesting clouds and haze. It makes me think of the light reflected on the calm water in the lower half, that mirror broken by gentle ripples doubling the trees on the island. It is a 1922 landscape that seems to suspend time, inviting us to observe the passage of light and stillness as if watching the sky at dawn.

It feels like I am on the other side of the water looking at a little island with lots of trees. There are about five or six tall trees with very black fluffy tops and skinny little trunks. In the water you can see their reflection shaking as if someone moved the mirror. On the left everything looks pale and blurry, like with fog. The sky is almost empty and it feels very calm, like when there is no wind and everything is quiet.
