What you would seeLo que verías

At the center of the print, under slanting rain rendered with agitated, feathery hatching, a couple seen from behind walks arm in arm beneath a single umbrella along a flooded lane that mirrors sky and architecture. He wears a top hat and carries a cane and a lantern, his coat bundled and slightly hunched; she wears a long skirt and shawl, leaning into him. Beside them a small, scruffy black dog trots, its silhouette also reflected in the puddles. In the background a two storied country house with steep roof, dormers, chimneys and glowing windows sits behind a low fence and gated pillars topped with ornamental urns; more classical urns on pedestals flank the foreground, while dense, scribbled trees and shrubs press in from both sides. The light is overcast and pearly, with strong tonal contrasts between deep inky blacks in clouds and figures and the warm off white of the paper in watery highlights. The sheet is framed by Buhot’s characteristic remarques, delicate marginal vignettes of vases, faces, bows and sketches that create a textured, storytelling border with drypoint burr and granular aquatint.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Let your eye travel along the shining puddled road that leads from the foreground to the embracing couple and then to the house beyond. Notice the little dog and the mirrored urns, then shift to the tiny sketches in the margins that quietly comment on the main scene.

ContextContexto

This is a print by French artist Félix Hilaire Buhot (1847–1898), a leading figure in the etching revival of the later 19th century, dated 1879–1880. The technique is etching, drypoint and aquatint, and the work is held in the Prints department of the Cleveland Museum of Art as a gift of Leonard C. Hanna Jr. Titled The Country Neighbors, with the French inscription Les voisins de campagne at the bottom, it shows an anonymous bourgeois couple in a rainy rural setting treated with gentle humor and atmospheric detail. No specific narrative is recorded, and the figures are probably generic types illustrating country sociability rather than portraits.

Curious detailDato curioso

Buhot often decorated his margins with witty remarques and stamped his proofs with a small red owl, a visual pun on his name, Buhot le hibou, which can be seen in red ink near the lower right of this impression.

If you look closely you will see it is not just black ink, it is etching, drypoint and aquatint at work. Buhot plays with the deep black of the clouds and the yellowish white of the paper left blank for puddles and reflections on the flooded road. I love those nervous, slanted rain lines and the rough texture of the remarque margin with little vignettes, small vases and faces. Everything is printed with very controlled contrasts of grayish light.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

Even though it is daytime, this print makes me think about light. The stormy sky is gray and diffuse, but there are glowing points: the lit windows of the country house in the background and the lantern carried by the man in the top hat. Everything is doubled on the flooded road, the couple under the umbrella, the little black dog and even the trees are reflected in the puddles. It is like a sky on the ground, a dark mirror that reminds us how much light guides us even in the rain.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

Look at the little dog! It trots beside the couple and its reflection also appears in the puddle, as if there were two puppies. The couple walks hugging under the umbrella and the man looks funny with his tall hat all hunched over. It is raining a lot and the road looks like a giant mirror. In the back there is a house with lights on and two pillars with fancy vases. I like to imagine they are going visiting and the puppy is leading them home.
