What you would seeLo que verías

A tall, narrow stained-glass panel is filled edge to edge with irregular pieces of colored glass joined by thick black lead lines. At the center, Christ hangs on a cross whose horizontal beam crosses the upper third and whose vertical post, rendered in yellow, runs down between his crossed feet. His pale, almost white body slumps under its own weight: arms stretched wide to nailed hands, head fallen to one side with closed eyes and blond hair, torso elongated and lightly shaded. A deep red cloth is wrapped at his waist. Behind him is a patchwork background of blues, from pale sky to dark navy, that makes his body glow by contrast. Two small angels flank the cross; the left one is obscured by mottled brown and tan glass, while the right, with blond hair, yellow wing and flowing white dress, floats diagonally beside his arm. Below, scrolling white vines curl around hanging clusters of grapes and pale leaves against the blue. At the very top, inside a trefoil arch, rises a white and gold Gothic canopy like a miniature church tower. Narrow architectural columns frame the sides. The surface feels fragile, luminous and fragmented.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with Christ's tilted head and closed, heavy posture, then follow his arms outward toward the angels. Next look down: the grapes beneath his feet change the cross from an instrument of execution into a symbol of wine, sacrifice, and new life.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this panel was made in England by an unknown artist around 1480–1500, using pot metal and white glass with silver stain, with later composite glass added. It comes from the Cleveland Museum of Art, gift of William G. Mather. It was originally part of a much larger window and shows Christ at the moment of death, flanked by angels, one collecting blood from his right hand in a chalice. Together with the grapevines, that image would have echoed the wine of the Mass. The source suggests it was probably placed behind a church altar; its original church is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

The yellows and golds on white glass are not a separate yellow glass: silver stain is a silver compound painted on and fired into the surface, allowing one piece to be both clear and golden.

I focus on the thick black lead lines holding every colored fragment, like a net embracing the light. The pale body of Christ is shaded with fine strokes that still endure, and his dark red loincloth contrasts with the intense yellow of the cross. I see brownish mottled glass veiling one angel, a sign of later replacements. Everything is fragile and luminous, a surface repaired over centuries that still lets light through.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This stained glass reminds me of looking at the night sky. The background of blue patches, from light blue to navy, works like a constellation that makes the central figure shine. The pale body seems to emit its own light against the darkness, like a star. Above, the white and gold Gothic canopy is like a tiny observatory. The light passing through the glass changes with the day, just as the sky I observe changes.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

Christ looks asleep on the cross, with his head tilted to one side and blond hair. His yellow cross is very tall and his feet are crossed. On one side there is a little angel with yellow wings flying as if playing. Below there are hanging grapes and little white plants twisting around. Everything is made of little colored pieces joined with black lines. It looks like a giant puzzle that shines when the sun hits it.
