What you would seeLo que verías

An extremely long horizontal handscroll to be viewed from right to left on aged ivory-beige paper. At the far right, two vertical columns of black-ink calligraphy with a square red seal mark the opening. From there a continuous panoramic landscape unfolds: ranges of soft and craggy mountains rendered in diluted grey-black ink with pale washes of bluish green and ochre. Some peaks fade into mist created by untouched paper left blank. In the foreground and middle ground the broad, pale Yangtze River meanders, dotted with tiny sails, fishing skiffs and clustered junks moored near wooded banks. Fine, thin-trunked trees with stippled foliage, tiled rooftops, bridges, hillside temples and winding paths appear throughout. The light is diffuse and hazy, like a misty morning, with no hard shadows. Textured dry brushwork defines rocks and trees, while smooth washes suggest water and sky. Human presence is minuscule against nature, emphasizing vastness. Small details such as ripples, distant pavilions and clustered sails reward slow, close looking and convey calm and timeless travel.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the calligraphy on the right and move slowly leftward as if sailing downstream. Notice how unpainted gaps become mist and give the composition room to breathe. Look for the tiny boats that shift the sense of scale and reveal a quietly inhabited world.

Curious detailDato curioso

A li is an old Chinese unit of distance of about 500 meters, so ten thousand li evokes a mythic, immeasurable length rather than an exact measurement of the Yangtze.

I focus on that aged ivory paper, almost beige like #E8DCC6, which is the real protagonist. The grayish black ink and the pale green-blue and ochre touches are applied in washes so thin they let the support breathe. I notice the unpainted voids that suggest mist and how dry brushstrokes model rocks and trees. It is an extremely long horizontal handscroll meant to be unrolled little by little, so every crease or wear mark tells the story of many hands that have opened it.

What I see is an old attempt to map immensity. The Yangzi River snakes wide and clear along the whole route, with tiny sails and junks that serve as reference points. Mountains follow one after another in layers that fade away, as if the artist were playing with depth and atmosphere. There are no hard shadows, only a diffuse light of a misty morning. That tiny human scale against nature reminds me of looking at the night sky and feeling small inside an endless landscape.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It is like a super long video game you have to unroll! It starts with black letters and a little square red seal and then the river shows up looking like a giant snake. There are sailboats as tiny as little ants and houses with roofs hidden among trees with skinny trunks. The mountains are gray and some disappear into the fog which is actually the blank paper. I like to imagine I am a little bird flying over all of it without ever stopping.

  1. #1

At the right end of the scroll, what two marks accompany the mountains and river to begin the reading?

    HintPista

Look at the beginning of the journey, where the ivory paper is still empty of landscape.

  2. #2

If you follow the wide clear river, what three kinds of tiny human traces will you see among trees, bridges and temples?

    HintPista

They look very small against the mountains, like little dots moving on the water and on the shore.

  3. #3

What background color does the artist leave unpainted to create mist between the peaks?

    HintPista

It is not ink, it is the emptiness of the support forming clouds and haze.
