What you would seeLo que verías

It is a horizontal etching in dark brownish-black ink on cream paper, enclosed by a thin printed border. In the foreground, three large, gnarled trees dominate the scene: one cluster at the far left, another trunk slightly left of center, and a third on the right. Their bark is built from dense hatching, short strokes, and pale scraped-looking patches that suggest roughness, knots, and light striking the surface. Nearly leafless branches twist across the top, thin and angular, with only a few small dotted clusters of foliage. Between the trunks the ground opens into a shallow, uneven depression—the gully—drawn with wavy contours, dark hollows, rocks, and tufts of grass. The middle distance is much lighter, almost blank, with a few tiny marks on the horizon that might be stones or distant forms. At left and right edges, smaller, slender trees recede into a hazy treeline. There are no people, animals, or buildings. The overall effect is quiet and wintry, made from line rather than color. Below the image, on the paper margin, “the Gully” is handwritten at lower left and “David Little” at lower right; a small monogram appears in the lower-left corner of the plate.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First, follow the dark trunks from top to bottom, then notice how the center grows paler and emptier. Look next for the sunken ground between them: that is the gully. Finally, examine the lower corners, where accumulated lines turn grass, stones, and bark into textures.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, *The Gully* is an etching by David Little (Australian, 1893–1951), dated within the broad range of 1908–48 and catalogued under the culture 'England, 20th century.' The source provides no description and does not identify the place depicted, the exact year, or an edition number, so the location probably cannot be established from these records alone. Etching is an intaglio printmaking technique in which lines are bitten into a metal plate with acid and then hold the ink. The credit line states that it was a gift in appreciation for what the armed forces did in Australia during the war; the specific war is not named there.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although the title announces a gully, there is no water in view: the depression in the land is suggested almost entirely by shadow, curved lines, and the sloping banks.

I focus on how this image is made. It is an etching, so every line was bitten with acid into a metal plate to hold dark ink. Look at the bark of the three large trees in the foreground, built from dense hatching, short strokes and pale gaps where the cream paper shows through. The thin printed border contains everything and below you can read «the Gully» and «David Little» handwritten, with a small monogram on the plate. There is no color, just line work creating texture and light.

There are no human figures here, just a paused landscape that reminds me of watching the sky at dawn. In the foreground three twisted trunks dominate and between them opens the irregular hollow of the gully with rocks and tufts of grass. Above, dry angular branches cut the emptiness like linear constellations. The middle ground is almost white, a minimal horizon with tiny marks that seem far away. It is all graphic silence, blackish brown ink on cream paper, with no night or stars but plenty of space to breathe.

These trees look like characters! The three big ones up front are all twisty with scratchy bark, as if they are tickled with little lines. Their skinny branches stretch up top with almost no leaves, just tiny dots. In the middle there is a funny dip, the gully, with little rocks and messy grass. Further back everything turns pale and hazy, with thin little trees on the sides. There are no people or animals, just the quiet forest in dark brown ink on cream paper. I want to jump over the hollow.
