What you would seeLo que verías
The object is a hollow sculpture of a standing feline, likely a caracal, shown in three-quarter view facing left against a neutral gray background. It dominates the center of the frame, with a compact body supported by straight, sturdy legs ending in small rounded paws. The surface is copper alloy with a dark, mottled patina ranging from greenish brown to oxidized bronze, with lighter worn areas and an irregular broken opening on the flank. The head is large, with a short open muzzle showing teeth, pointed ears topped with small spheres, and eyes formed by circular piercings. The neck, chest and sides are covered in extremely fine openwork of palmettes and interlaced geometric patterns designed to release smoke; bands of engraved inscription run along the neck and back. The long tail arches high over the back and ends in a flared palmette finial, also pierced. Soft, even lighting reveals the raised chasing, the matte sheen of the metal and the pitted, corroded texture, especially on the legs and belly, while the delicate fretwork casts tiny shadows that emphasize its craftsmanship and hollow construction.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the detachable head and slightly open muzzle, then follow the pierced openwork across the neck and flanks where smoke would have escaped. Notice the inscribed bands along the back and how the arched tail completes the animal’s silhouette; the damaged opening on the side reveals the hollow interior and its practical use.
ContextContexto
According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, this is a copper alloy incense burner, cast, engraved, chased and pierced, made in Khurasan, Iran, between 1150 and 1200 during the Seljuq period (1037–1194). Maker unknown. In 11th and 12th century Iran, animal-shaped vessels became popular, especially incense burners, and felines were favored motifs in Persian art. The head was cast separately and is removable so hot coals and incense could be placed inside the hollow body. Qur’anic verses on the neck and spine encourage worshippers to pause work, attend prayer and then disperse to seek God’s bounty, with the perfumed smoke diffusing through the pierced palmette decoration serving as a sensory reminder of that teaching.

Curious detailDato curioso
Zoomorphic openwork burners like this were engineered to work as both sculpture and censer: live coals were placed inside the hollow body and scented smoke literally breathed out through the animal’s pierced skin.

If you look closely you will see what moves me most metalwork that feels hollow and alive at once. This feline is made of cast and chiseled copper alloy from more than eight centuries ago in Khurasan. Its patina between greenish brown and oxidized bronze shows its age with stains and eroded areas. I love the openwork of palmettes where smoke once escaped and the detachable head used to place embers inside. The inscriptions on the neck recall its ritual and scented purpose.

To me this feline feels like a constellation made to be smelled. Imagine smoke rising like small nebulae through the circular eyes and the openwork on the chest and flanks. Its compact body holds a sky of carved palmettes and interlaced geometry that lets light pass like stars. The arched tail over the back ends in a flared palmette and also breathes smoke. It is a portable universe from the twelfth century that joined Persian art and spiritual message through scent.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a big grumpy but cute kitty with little balls on its pointy ears and a long tail lifted as if about to jump. It is full of tiny holes shaped like little flowers and patterns where nice smelling smoke came out. Its little mouth is open and you can see its teeth. I like that its head can be removed like a little lid to put embers inside. It has dark and light spots because it is very very old from many many years ago.
