What you would seeLo que verías
A horizontal etching in black ink on off-white paper, surrounded by a wide margin and the indented mark of the printing plate. More than the upper half is taken up by an open sky, drawn with very fine lines, clouds that are barely suggested, and a few tiny birds toward the right. Below, a rough, almost empty field stretches across the foreground with short strokes, tufts of grass and churned earth; in the lower right corner, a dark puddle made with cross-hatching concentrates the deepest black in the image. At the centre, two oxen pull a wooden cart: the one in front is pale, with a massive body, thin legs and short horns, while the dark one behind it emerges in such a way that the two seem to share a single volume. Beside the large, clearly spoked wheel walk two labourers in work clothes; one wears a wide-brimmed hat and holds the shafts or reins, the other stoops close to the animal. To the right is a dense mass of bushes and trees with fine, vibrating foliage; to the left, a solitary tree balances the scene, and on the far horizon rooftops and a church spire can barely be made out. At upper left it reads “Ch. J. 1845” and at lower left there is a small “9”. The light is diffuse daytime, with no hard shadows: everything is built from line alone.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the enormous, almost empty sky, then drop down to the small group of oxen, cart and men that carries the whole scene. Notice how the white ox and the black ox behind it overlap so closely that they seem to share one body. Finally, look for the tiny church spire on the far left: it quietly connects this field to a village outside the frame.
ContextContexto
Landscape, Labourers is an 1845 etching by the French artist Charles-Émile Jacque (1813–1894), held by the Cleveland Museum of Art through the Bequest of Mrs. Madeleine Hamill in memory of Lawrence Hamill, according to the source data. Jacque is generally associated with the Barbizon milieu, whose artists turned away from idealized history painting toward direct observation of rural life, farm animals and working landscapes. The specific place shown is not known; it is probably a generic French countryside rather than an identifiable site. Made when etching was being revived in France as an original artistic medium, not merely a way to reproduce paintings, the print values close looking at humble, everyday labour.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual detail: the darkest area in the whole print is not a tree or an animal, but the small puddle in the lower right foreground, built up with dense cross-hatching.

- What does the contrast between the vast empty sky and the small working group do to our sense of the labourers' importance?¿Qué efecto produce el contraste entre el cielo inmenso y vacío y el grupo pequeño que trabaja sobre la importancia que damos a esos campesinos?
- Why might an artist choose the slow, fine medium of etching to depict such ordinary, physical work?¿Por qué un artista elegiría un medio lento y fino como el aguafuerte para representar un trabajo físico tan ordinario?

If you get close to the bone-colored paper you will notice the embossed plate mark and the wide margin protecting the image. I focus on how the artist creates everything with line alone: the open sky with very fine clouds, the rough field built with short strokes and that dark puddle in the corner made with cross-hatching that holds the most intense black. I am drawn to the wheel with its clearly marked spokes and the two oxen that seem to share one volume, one light in front and one dark behind, achieved without washes, only with black ink.

I look at the sky first because it takes up more than half of the image. It is a bright and diffuse daylight, with no harsh shadows, barely suggested clouds and tiny birds toward the right that give scale to the vastness. That luminous emptiness contrasts with the worked earth below, where two peasants and their ox-drawn cart move slowly. On the horizon, rooftops and a church spire are just hinted at, as if the human world were small beneath that open and serene vault.

It looks like the oxen are stuck together and are like a single animal with many legs. One is light-colored and the other is dark and they are pulling a cart with a really big wheel. Next to them walk two men with hats, one holding the reins. I like the little black puddle in the corner because it stands out a lot compared to everything else that is light. Up above there are tiny little birds and many trees with fine little leaves, and far away you can see a tiny church.
