What you would seeLo que verías

The print shows an aged sheet of paper in mottled brownish-ochre with staining and a fibrous, slightly rough texture. At the center sits a roundel with a lobed, cloud-like outline, rendered in fine black line. Inside, a river landscape unfolds in a distant view. In the immediate foreground along the lower bank, tiny market stalls with peaked awnings and minute human figures are gathered, some walking, some standing in groups. The river itself is indicated by delicate horizontal lines and soft wavy hatching, with several boats afloat: small rowed craft in the middle and a larger covered vessel with a wooden cabin to the right. To the left background, the arched Ryōgoku Bridge stretches diagonally across the water, its trestled structure crowded with countless dots suggesting pedestrians. On the far bank, low rows of houses, clusters of trees and horizontal bands in the sky hint at the last light of sunset, now much faded. Surrounding the roundel, Japanese calligraphy in fluid black brushstrokes runs above and below, vertical and varied in scale. The overall woodblock impression is crisp yet pale, its muted palette and worn surface giving the scene a quiet, melancholic atmosphere.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First see the central roundel as a window and follow the river from the market stalls in the foreground to the curved bridge in the distance. Then linger on the calligraphy framing the scene and on the faded, stained paper that now shapes the sunset mood. Notice the tiny dots on the bridge and the small sails, minimal marks that bring the whole view to life.

ContextContexto

According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a Japanese woodblock print titled Sunset at Ryōgoku Bridge by Katsukawa Shunkō II, who signed this work as «design by Shunsen» (Shunsen ga), a name he used from New Year's 1806 after becoming a student of Katsukawa Shun'ei (1762-1819). He took the name Shunkō II around 1820, so the print is dated 1806–20, in the Edo period (1615–1868). The image captures boats and riverside stalls near Ryōgoku Bridge within a roundel, accompanied by a poem. Much faded today, traces of color once indicating sunset remain. The artist is known for prints of beauties, actors and landscapes, and in his final years he painted designs on ceramics.

Curious detailDato curioso

The Ryōgoku Bridge, built in 1659 over the Sumida River in Edo (present-day Tokyo), was one of the few bridges crossing the river during the Edo period and was famous as a site for fireworks, entertainments and bustling riverside markets.

If you look closely you will see the ocre brownish paper, with stains and visible fibers, very faded over time. The sunset color is almost gone, but you can still guess it in the horizontal bands of the sky. I focus on the central lobed medallion, shaped like a cloud, printed in sharp yet soft black ink, and on the handwritten calligraphy around it with vertical strokes. That fragility is what I try to preserve, the trace of pigment and handling.

I always look for the sky and here it is suggested with very faded horizontal bands that once showed the last rays of the sun. The artist created a sunset with ink and traces of color now almost lost, and that makes me think about how we observe fading light. From this middle distance, Ryōgoku Bridge in the background and the Sumida River with its boats lie beneath that pale sky, reminding us that the city also watches dusk every day.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I like how the picture looks like it is inside a wobbly cloud with bumpy edges! If you look inside there is a river with little lines, tiny boats with oars and a bigger roofed one on the right. Down below there are stalls with triangle roofs and tiny people walking. In the back the bridge is covered with dots, those are the people crossing. Outside the cloud there are Japanese letters around everything like a secret poem.
