What you would seeLo que verías
Against a matte black textile with a very fine vertical ribbing, a small gold ornament stands upright in the exact center of the frame, photographed from the front and lit from above. The upper part is a bird seen head-on, with its head raised and slightly tilted. Its beak is short, conical and pointed; one eye reads as a small black dot and another tiny perforation is visible on the face, giving it an alert, almost quizzical expression. The elongated body swells at the chest and tapers downward. Across it run symmetrical diagonal ridges in a chevron or herringbone pattern, suggesting folded wings or layered feathers, with deep grooves that catch shadow between bright highlights. Near the lower body there are small irregular openings and rough, unfinished-looking edges, evidence of the casting process. A tiny curled element and a thin metal ring link the bird to the part below: a flat, hammered dangle, wider at the top and rounded to a soft point at the bottom, rather like a heart or shield. It is pierced near the top, has an uneven, lightly pitted surface, and is much plainer than the bird. No hand or coin gives a scale, but as a bead or pendant it was clearly made to be held, threaded and worn.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the chevron ridges from the raised head down the folded body, as if tracing feathers with your eyes. Then stop at the small ring: the contrast between the finely modeled bird and the almost plain dangle changes the piece from a miniature sculpture into an ornament meant to move.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a *Bird Bead*, dated to about 900–1550, made in Colombia in Muisca style by an unknown maker, and cast in gold. It belongs to the museum's Art of the Americas holdings and was a gift of Mrs. Edward S. Harkness in memory of Mrs. Stephen V. Harkness. The source explains that Muisca metalwork falls into two broad groups: ornaments meant to be worn and figurines made as offerings. This piece belongs to the first group. Its herringbone moldings, openwork and wing details were already present in the wax model used for casting; the dangling element was attached afterwards. Who made it, who wore it, and exactly where it was found are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
The flat dangle was not cast together with the bird: it was attached afterwards through a ring, so when the ornament was worn it probably swung—and may have caught the light—separately from the body above it.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator the first thing I notice is the trace of making. This tiny gold bird keeps deep grooves between the herringbone moldings, where light creates intense highlights and sharp shadows. Near the base I see small openings and rough edges from casting, and above the thin ring that joins the bird to the heart-shaped dangle. It moves me that the feathers were already modeled in wax and that the dangle was added later, like two moments joined to be worn.

As a stargazer I see a vigilant pose in this golden bird. Its head is raised, its conical beak points upward and a tiny pierced eye seems alert to something invisible above the black cloth, as if watching stars. The body with its symmetrical V shapes reminds me of orderly constellations and folded wings ready for flight. That simple dangle below, joined by a curled ring, makes me think of a pendulum or a little shield swinging and turning with the wearer's movement.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a super brave little gold bird standing very straight on a black cloth. It has a pointy little beak, a tiny black eye and feathery patterns like shiny herringbones that make little shadows. Below it hangs a tiny golden heart with a little hole, joined by a small ring. I imagine it jingling when someone walks. I like it because it looks curious, as if saying hi with its head tilted and wanting to fly away.
