What you would seeLo que verías
At the center of a black background of finely ribbed vertical fabric sits a small gold jewel, photographed from the front and occupying only the middle third of the image. The upper part is a stylized bird with its wings folded against its body. Its raised head ends in a short, pointed beak and tilts slightly upward; around the neck are two black, irregular perforations, one larger than the other. Across the breast and wings, incised lines in a herringbone pattern cross to form an X, suggesting neatly arranged feathers. The body narrows at the waist and then widens toward the tail, which is also marked with vertical and diagonal grooves. From that lower area hangs a small metal ring passing through the hole of a flat, broad, almost trapezoidal plaque with rounded, uneven edges. The tilted plaque partly covers the bird's lower body. The gold is pale and yellowish, worn-looking, with soft highlights on the raised areas and duller, porous patches and small dark spots elsewhere. Light falling from above creates minimal shadow and makes the relief stand out against the uniform darkness. The whole object looks tiny, light, and fragile.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the X formed by the folded wings, then move up to the small head and its uneven holes. Next, look at the ring and the flat plaque below: that separate, movable piece changes the jewel from a static figure into something meant to hang, shift, and catch the light.
ContextContexto
According to the source data, this is a bird bead or pendant of cast gold, made by an unknown maker between about 900 and 1550, in Colombia in the Muisca style, and now held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. The museum notes that Muisca metalwork included both ornaments to be worn and figurines made as offerings. In this piece, the herringbone moldings, openwork, and wing details were already part of the wax model used for casting, while the dangle was attached afterward. Who wore it, where exactly it was found, and its precise date are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
The hanging plaque was not cast together with the bird: it was attached afterward with a small ring, so it could probably move slightly when the ornament was worn.
Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- What does the bird gain, visually and symbolically, from being reduced to a few lines and a crossed-wings silhouette?¿Qué gana el ave, en lo visual y en lo simbólico, al quedar reducida a unas cuantas líneas y a una silueta de alas cruzadas?
- How does the movable plaque change your idea of how this jewel sounded, moved, or felt on the body?¿Cómo cambia la placa móvil tu idea de cómo sonaba, se movía o se sentía esta joya sobre el cuerpo?

I focus on how this bird-shaped bead dated to around 900–1550 in Colombia, in Muisca style, was made. The herringbone reliefs forming an X on the chest, the openwork at the neck and the wing details were already part of the wax model used for casting, not engraved later. The trapezoidal plaque below was added afterward with that little ring. The pale gold looks worn, porous, with dark spots and soft highlights on the raised areas where light falls from above.

I like to imagine this tiny jewel as a miniature constellation against a black sky of fabric with vertical ribs. The golden bird is centered, wings folded and head lifted looking upward, as if searching for something above. The two dark perforations at the neck remind me of a double star with different sizes. The tilted trapezoidal plaque hanging below partly covers the tail, and the whole piece glows faintly, fragile and serene, like a single point of light holding on in the darkness.

It is a very tiny golden birdie that looks like it is posing for the photo. It has little wings tucked close to its body with tiny lines forming an X like drawn feathers. On its little neck it has two black holes, one bigger than the other, and its pointy beak looks upward. Hanging below it has a little plaque with a tiny ring that looks a bit tilted. Everything shines just a little and looks old and delicate against a black background that looks like velvet.
