What you would seeLo que verías

Centered vertically against a matte black background, a small gold ornament stands out through the contrast between dark fabric and warm metal. The support is a fine, tight textile with a subtle vertical rib, visible across the whole image and softened only around the piece. At the top, the bird's head is tiny, raised and slightly worn, with an elongated form that suggests a beak without clearly defining the face. Below it, the compact body narrows at the middle like a waist; two wings fold against the chest and cross in incised diagonal lines that meet in a V, creating a herringbone pattern. Small holes and dark gaps appear near the head and shoulders, giving parts of the silhouette an openwork quality. Toward the base, the body splays into two feet or tail-like points that frame a bright gold ring. Through that ring hangs a flat, broad plaque, wider than the bird, shaped like a rounded shield ending in a soft point at the bottom. The plaque is paler and more mottled, with tiny pits, specks and irregular edges. Light is even and frontal, with minimal shadow, revealing matte textures, worn high points and the difference between the modeled body and the simpler dangling plate.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the flat plaque at the bottom, the broadest and brightest part, then follow the ring upward into the bird's gathered body. Notice how the crossing lines lead to the small head at the top, and then look again at the ring: it is the joint that makes one object move in two parts.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a cast-gold bird ornament made between about 900 and 1550 in Colombia, in Muisca style, by an unknown maker. The museum notes that Muisca metalwork falls into two broad groups: ornaments made to be worn and figurines made as offerings. This piece belongs to the first group. Its herringbone moldings, openwork and wing details were formed in the wax model before casting, while hanging elements like the lower plaque were attached afterward. The exact bird species, its wearer and its place of discovery are not recorded in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso

The most delicate parts of the design were not carved into the finished gold: they were already present in the wax model that disappeared during lost-wax casting, so the pattern survived by being replaced with metal.

I see the work of cast gold made with the lost wax technique. The bird's body still shows the V-shaped incisions on the folded wings, the herringbone pattern that was already in the wax model, and the small openwork holes near the head and shoulders that lighten the figure. I notice the wear on the head and the contrast between the modeled body and the flat plaque below, paler and mottled, with tiny pits and irregular edges. That shiny ring and the smooth pendant were added after casting, they were not part of the initial mold.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I am drawn to how the warm shine of gold stands out against the matte black background, like a tiny constellation. The vertical figure, with its diminutive upright head and two pointed ends at the base, seems suspended in darkness. The wings crossed over the chest and the shield-shaped plaque hanging from the ring give a sense of serenity, a steady point of light. We do not know what bird it represents or who wore it, dated between 900 and 1550 in Muisca style, but its even frontal light invites calm contemplation.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a tiny golden birdie with its little wings crossed as if hugging itself. On top it has a small head with a beak and tiny black holes, and below hangs a big plaque like a little shield with a soft point. It shines brightly on the black cloth and you can see its V-shaped lines. I like the small golden ring in the middle that joins the birdie to its pendant. It looks a bit old and worn, but it seems strong and calm, as if ready to fly.
