Centered in a vertical composition, against a black, finely woven fabric background with a grainy texture, is a small gold piece photographed straight from the front. At the top rises an elongated bird's head, seen head-on, with a pointed beak directed upward and a slightly rough, modeled face where the eyes are barely suggested. At the sides of the neck are tiny curved loops and worn remains. The body narrows and lengthens, covered with incised diagonal lines that meet at the center in a chevron or herringbone pattern, suggesting folded feathers or wings. Further down, the silhouette pinches into a narrow waist and then flares again into a smooth, triangular base. From its lower edge hangs a small vertical ring, threaded through an irregular hole in a flat, matte, roughly heart-shaped disc, slightly pointed at the bottom. The dangle has small raised spots and an uneven surface. The gold is pale and muted rather than bright, with beige, ochre, and faint pinkish tones, fine scratches, and a granular texture from casting. The steady, frontal lighting creates little shadow, emphasizes the relief, and leaves the piece floating, isolated and magnified, over the darkness.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the raised head and follow the zigzag lines down to the narrow waist, as if tracing the bird's body with your eye. Then look at the ring that joins the flat disc: that small connection changes the piece from a static figure into something meant to move. Finally, look for the tiny side loops and the irregular hole, traces of how it was made and assembled.

ContextContexto

Catalogued as *Bird Bead*, this small cast-gold ornament is attributed to an unknown maker, in Muisca style from Colombia, and dated broadly to about 900–1550. It is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, in the Art of the Americas department. According to the source, Muisca metalwork is usually divided between ornaments made to be worn and figurines made as offerings; this piece belongs to the first group. Its herringbone moldings, openwork, and wing details were already present in the wax model used for casting, while the dangling elements were attached afterward. Its exact wearer and original context are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

The lower disc was not cast together with the bird: it was attached later with a small ring, so the pendant probably shifted and caught the light when the wearer moved.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What changes when we imagine this bird in motion on a body, rather than still against a black background?¿Qué cambia cuando imaginamos esta ave en movimiento sobre un cuerpo, y no inmóvil sobre un fondo negro?
  2. Why represent a bird with such geometric lines instead of more realistic feathers?¿Por qué representar a un ave con líneas tan geométricas en lugar de plumas más realistas?
  3. What can the ring and the added disc tell us about the importance of movement and shine in jewelry?¿Qué nos pueden decir el anillo y el disco añadido sobre la importancia del movimiento y el brillo en una joya?

Come closer and you will see why this little bird fascinates me. Its gold does not shine like new jewelry, it looks pale and matte, with soft beige and ochre tones and even a faint pinkish cast, all finely scratched and grainy from casting. The body shows those zigzag incisions forming a neat herringbone pattern, like folded feathers, and below hangs a little heart-shaped disc with its tiny ring. I wonder how they managed to get the pattern and openwork right from the wax model, and how the dangling part can still move after so many centuries.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I always look for movement in stillness, and this bird reminds me of that. It is photographed from the front, with its beak pointing upward, as if it were about to take flight from the darkness. The grainy black background makes me think of a night sky, and the golden bird in the center looks like a tiny constellation floating alone. I like to imagine its little hanging disc swinging like a pendulum, marking silent time. We do not know who wore it, but its muted glow surely accompanied someone who also watched the sky for signs.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

Look, it is a little golden bird! It has a longish head and its tiny beak pointing straight up, as if it were singing. Its belly is covered with little herringbone lines, like wings hugging itself. Down below it has a narrow waist and a little triangle, and from there hangs a heart-like charm with a tiny ring that moves. If you blew on it, it would surely jingle. I imagine it belonged to someone very special and that the little bird hung from a necklace and danced every time they walked, glowing softly against their clothes.
