St. Jerome in the Cave by Albrecht AltdorferSan Jerónimo en la cueva, de Albrecht Altdorfer
Albrecht Altdorfer (German, c. 1480–1538) · 1513–1515 · Germany
woodcut
What you would seeLo que verías
A vertical black-and-white woodcut with dense, high-contrast linework showing a hermit's scene inside a rocky cave. At the lower center, an elderly bearded man with a faint halo —St. Jerome— kneels in a tattered robe with his hands clasped in prayer before a makeshift altar formed by a rock draped with cloth. On the altar stand a small crucifix, a skull and an open book; behind it hang a rosary and another skull suspended from the rock. To the saint's left in the foreground, a lion with a shaggy mane and long tail stands with lowered head, its fur rendered in wavy, fine lines. The ground is uneven, made of broken stones and planks forming a rough path. In the background, deeper in the cavern, a second opening reveals a ladder leaning against the wall and draped fabrics. The cave vault dominates the composition: huge boulders with rough, grainy texture shaded by cross-hatching and parallel strokes that build volume and darkness. Stalactites and stringy roots hang from above; light appears to enter from outside, catching the saint's face and the lion's back while the rest remains in speckled shadow. The image is enclosed by a thin black border with small ink spots typical of early printing.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Follow the dark arch of the cave that frames the whole scene, then move down to the bright spot where Jerome prays. Pause on the lion in the foreground and how its fur echoes the texture of the stone. Look closely at the small symbols on the altar —the skull and crucifix— that turn the grotto into a chapel.
ContextContexto
The work is recorded as St. Jerome in the Cave by Albrecht Altdorfer (German, about 1480–1538), dated 1513–1515, classified as a Print in woodcut technique and housed in the Prints department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, John L. Severance Fund. Altdorfer was a leading master of the Danube School, noted for naturalistic detail and landscape during the Northern Renaissance. The image shows St. Jerome in penitence, a Church Father traditionally depicted in the wilderness with the lion he was said to have befriended, along with the crucifix and skull as symbols of meditation on mortality. No further description is given in the source, but the iconography and date align with his early religious prints.

Curious detailDato curioso
Albrecht Altdorfer was among the first European artists to make landscape the main subject of a picture, and in this woodcut the rocky nature occupies more space than the saint himself, which was highly unusual for religious prints of the early 1500s.

Look closely at the linework, it is a vertical black and white woodcut and everything is built with lines. Altdorfer uses cross-hatching and parallel hatching to give volume to the huge rocks of the vault, leaving some areas in grainy half-light and others brightly lit. I love how he managed to make the saint's ragged mantle, the lion's wavy fur and the fibrous stalactites distinct using only black ink on light paper, with its thin border and even small ink spots typical of the early printing from 1513 to 1515.

This cave reminds me of a natural observatory. The rocky vault dominates everything and light seems to come from outside, outside the image, lighting just Saint Jerome's face and the lion's back while the rest stays in deep darkness. The rocks shaded with dense hatching, the hanging stalactites and fibrous roots create an inner night. It feels like the hermit is searching for clarity in darkness, with his improvised stone altar, his small crucifix and his open book under that dim glow that invites contemplation.

The long-bearded man is kneeling and praying and he looks very lonely but he is not alone because he has a big fluffy-maned lion standing beside him with its head down as if it were praying too. The skull on his stone altar next to the little open book creeps me out a bit and makes me curious, and there is another skull hanging with a rosary. Everything is a cave of giant stones with a little ladder in the back and lots of little black lines making shadows everywhere.
