What you would seeLo que verías
A vertical engraving in black ink on bone-colored paper, built from dense parallel and cross-hatched lines. In the left foreground, an elderly, long-bearded king wearing a turban sits on a raised throne; his broad cloak falls in heavy folds, he holds a scepter resting on the floor, and he watches the scene impassively. At his feet and across the central steps lie numerous naked babies, on their backs or sides, their small rounded bodies scattered over the floor. At center, helmeted soldiers in capes raise long swords, seize children by one foot, or run them through, while other bodies tumble down the stairs. At right in the foreground, two kneeling women in veils and long dresses embrace each other and shelter a baby; behind them, other mothers struggle with soldiers and cry out. The background shows an interior with a column, a curtain, and a dark doorway. In the upper right corner, as a simultaneous scene set in a rocky landscape, riders flee on horseback and a man carries a child away. An ornate signature appears at bottom center. The dead children in the immediate foreground, almost touching the lower edge, make the violence impossible to avoid.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with Herod, still and seated at the left, and compare his calm with the movement around him. Then follow the steps downward, counting the small bodies, until you reach the mothers at the right. Finally, look at the upper right corner: that small simultaneous scene changes the story from a single massacre to an escape unfolding at the same time.
ContextContexto
According to the source data, this is a German engraving from about 1490–1500, part of *The Life of the Virgin* series, held by the Cleveland Museum of Art and credited to the John L. Severance Fund. It depicts the Massacre of the Innocents, the episode narrated in the Gospel of Matthew in which King Herod orders the killing of young children. The source names Israhel van Meckenem (c. 1440–1503) and Hans Holbein (c. 1465–1524), but does not specify each artist’s exact role, so it is not known for certain who designed and who engraved the image. In late fifteenth-century Europe, prints made it possible to circulate religious images widely and inexpensively.

Curious detailDato curioso
A striking visual fact is that Herod never rises from his throne: the entire massacre unfolds before him like an order being carried out at a distance, while his hand rests calmly on the arm of his chair.

This engraving in black ink on bone-colored paper first makes me look at how it was made. The dense lines and cross-hatching build the heavy folds of the king's mantle and the volume of the small bodies on the staircase. He sits on the left, with turban and scepter, impassive, while soldiers with swords fill the center. I pause at the contrast between the very black ink and the light background, and the ornate signature below that marks the work of the German workshop.

What I see is a story told as if time were folded, something we also do in astronomy when we look far away. In the foreground the king on his throne watches the violence on the staircase, with babies on the floor and helmeted soldiers. But at the upper right, in a rocky landscape, horsemen are already fleeing on horseback. It is a simultaneous narration: two moments in one image. The interior with column and curtain below contrasts with that open and distant exterior.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
This image makes me sad and makes me want to look away, but I also cannot stop looking. There are many babies lying on the stairs and on the floor, and soldiers with very large swords. On the right two women with veils hug each other to protect a baby and other mothers are fighting and shouting. The old long-bearded king sits up high doing nothing. In a little corner at the top some men escape on horseback with a child.
