What you would seeLo que verías

It is a vertical lithograph, designed as a sheet-music cover, printed mostly in black on aged, cream-colored paper with a grainy, speckled texture. Across the top, large hand-lettered text reads “Les Vieilles Histoires / Sagesse,” with smaller credits on either side. In the foreground at lower right is the curved back of a chair, drawn with thick black lines. Seated there, seen from behind, is a woman with reddish hair piled up, a pale bare back, and a very light blue-green dress with wide, almost wing-like sleeves. She is turned toward an older bald man standing at the left in a black evening suit, white shirt, pale bow tie, and a small flower on his lapel. He tilts his head, half-closes his eyes, purses his lips, and places one hand on his chest in a pompous, declamatory gesture. Between them, toward the upper right, rises a tall lamp with a white, flame-shaped shade that resembles a crown or a hand. Tiny printed prices and publisher's information fill the bottom edge, worn and faint in places.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the man's face and the hand over his chest, as if he were delivering a solemn lesson. Then shift to the woman seen from behind: her reaction remains hidden from us. Finally, notice the lamp between them, whose flame almost looks like a raised hand commenting on the scene.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a lithograph made in 1893 by French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864–1901). It belongs to the print category and was acquired with the Dudley P. Allen Fund. The lettering within the image identifies it as the cover for “Sagesse,” from *Les Vieilles Histoires*, with poems by Jean Goudezki set to music by Désiré Dihau, published in Paris by G. Ondet. Toulouse-Lautrec is well known for his posters and prints of Parisian nightlife. It is not known, from the source data alone, whether this specific scene illustrates a particular verse of the song.

Curious detailDato curioso

In the lower right corner, the small print states that one hundred numbered and signed proofs were pulled from this drawing “avant la lettre” — before the lettering was added.

  1. What kind of “wisdom” might the older man be imparting, judging by his posture and expression?¿Qué tipo de “sabiduría” puede estar impartiendo el hombre mayor, a juzgar por su postura y su expresión?
  2. Why might the artist show us only the woman's back, hiding her reaction?¿Por qué el artista nos muestra solo la espalda de la mujer y oculta su reacción?
  3. How does the elegant, minimal drawing change our reading of what could be a moralizing song?¿Cómo cambia el dibujo elegante y mínimo nuestra lectura de lo que podría ser una canción moralizante?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I focus on the aged cream paper, with its grainy and mottled texture, and how black dominates the printing while letting the woman’s very pale green-blue dress and reddish hair breathe. The thick lines of the curved chair back and the hand-lettered typography of Les Vieilles Histoires Sagesse show this 1893 lithograph as a Parisian sheet music cover made to be both used and preserved.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer I look at that tall lamp with its flame-shaped white shade like a crown standing between the two figures, seemingly the only light in the scene. I imagine it shining down on the bald man in the black evening suit declaiming with a pompous gesture and on the woman seen from behind in her pale dress watching him. In this Parisian night cabaret of 1893, the light cuts through the black and cream and makes the contrast between youth and old age theatrical.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

Look at the bald man in the black suit with a little flower on his lapel! He makes funny faces, squints his eyes, pouts and puts his hand on his chest as if he were singing something super important. The woman in the pale green dress with reddish hair sits with her back to us on a curvy chair just watching him. The lamp above looks like a little crown with light. Everything is in black on cream paper and the big letters on top say Les Vieilles Histoires Sagesse.
