What you would seeLo que verías
A vertical black-and-white lithograph on cream paper, with wide blank margins around an irregular, grainy printed area. In the right foreground, occupying more than half of the image, a woman is shown in left-facing profile, cut off by the lower and right edges. She wears a high-necked black dress or coat that forms a compact, almost abstract mass, a dark hat tilted over her forehead, and her hair gathered into a round bun. Her face is a pale shape with a pointed nose, pursed lips, a lowered eyelid, and a few short lines marking her ear and neck; a thin white collar separates face from clothing. Behind her, at upper left, a man in a light hat leans over what appears to be a piano, his black torso contrasting with loose white strokes for his trousers. Below him, another smaller figure in a hat is partly hidden, as if among the audience. Vertical smudges suggest curtains or a dim stage background. At lower left, sketchy horizontal lines evoke a railing or music stands, and at lower right, on a lightly shaded table, sits a stemmed glass on a saucer, drawn with minimal strokes. The light is flat but theatrical, built from solid blacks, white reserves, and speckled gray textures characteristic of lithographic ink.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the large black mass of the spectator and notice how little of her face is drawn. Then move to the pianist in the background and to the half-hidden figure at the left. Finally, look at the lower right corner: the glass on the table changes the scene into a pause within the nightlife.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual observation: the glass at lower right is made with only a few vertical strokes and a curved line for the saucer, yet it is instantly readable beside the enormous black silhouette of the woman.

- What does the spectator feel while looking away from the viewer, and how does her expression change the atmosphere of the show?¿Qué siente la espectadora mientras mira fuera de nuestro alcance y cómo cambia su gesto el ambiente del espectáculo?
- Why place a member of the audience, rather than the performer, in the foreground?¿Por qué colocar en primer plano a una persona del público y no a quien actúa en el escenario?
- How do the stark black masses and unfinished areas influence the sense of a fleeting night scene?¿Cómo influyen las masas negras rotundas y las zonas sin terminar en la sensación de una escena nocturna fugaz?

Look at the cream margins around the lithographic image. The black is not uniform: there are saturated solids in the woman’s dress and hat, white reserves in her face and collar, and granular grays in the background. That speckled texture is typical of lithographic ink on stone. Notice also how the figure is cropped by the edges, at the bottom and on the right, as if the paper barely contains her. Everything speaks of a quick, direct process on the matrix.

She is not looking at the bright stage, she looks toward the half-light where someone else is making music. What is she observing with that half-closed eyelid and pursed lips? In the café-concert everyone looks forward, but she is turned to the side, cropped, alone with her stemmed glass on the table. She is like a star that seems to belong to a constellation yet follows its own orbit. Her attention creates another center of gravity in the room, quieter than the piano.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
The lady takes up almost the whole picture but she does not fit completely, her black dress is huge and covers everything! You only see her pale face in profile, with a pointy nose and a little round bun behind. She looks bored or deep in thought. Behind there is a man with a light hat leaning over something black, I think it is a piano, and below there is a little stemmed glass on a small table. I like that she is not singing, she is just watching the others.

Besides the large spectator on the right, look for two hatted silhouettes in the background on the left.
