What you would seeLo que verías

A tall, narrow, symmetrical object stands at the center, photographed from the front against a gray background that lightens toward the bottom. It resembles a ceremonial covered cup built up in tiers. At the bottom, a flat circular base of gold- and silver-toned metal, engraved in detail, carries three visible cabochons: green at the front and reddish ones at the sides. Above it rises a short stem with a transparent faceted crystal knop, surrounded by small metal branches, white pearls, and tiny stones. At the center, a miniature human figure stands with arms raised to support the main vessel; it wears enamel elements in blue, green, and turquoise that stand out against the metal. That central vessel is a smooth, elongated transparent cup clasped by gilt mounts shaped like branches, flowers, and leaves, set with pearls and green, blue, and red gems. Above it sits a smaller embossed gilt cup with a large red cabochon at the front, crowned by a broad lid and a crystal dome. At the very top, a transparent pear- or teardrop-shaped finial, framed in metal and set with pink and green stones, ends in a tiny flower. Soft light glints off the crystal, the aged gilding, the matte pearls, and the polished surfaces.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the teardrop-shaped finial at the very top and move slowly down, level by level, as if reading the object. Then focus on the small central figure: it is not mere decoration, but appears to bear and present the main vessel. Finally, look for anything red or liquid inside the transparent parts; the title leads you to expect something that the image does not clearly show.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this work is titled Blood Reliquary, is by an unknown maker, dates to the 1500s, and probably comes from Italy, although the source itself marks that origin with a question mark. It is classified as gilt-silver metalwork in the Medieval Art department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, and belongs to The Norweb Collection. A reliquary is a precious container made to preserve and display venerated remains or objects associated with holy figures; here, the title indicates a blood relic, but the source does not identify whose blood it was or record its history. From these data, it is not known for which church or person it was commissioned.

Curious detailDato curioso

Many medieval and Renaissance reliquaries used rock crystal precisely because it is transparent: it allowed the faithful to see —or sense that they were seeing— the relic without opening the container or touching it.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What does it change if a sacred content is kept in a transparent vessel rather than a closed one?¿Qué cambia si un contenido sagrado se guarda en un recipiente transparente en vez de uno cerrado?
  2. Why do you think so much ornament, gems, and pearls were gathered around something so small and fragile?¿Por qué crees que se reunió tanto adorno, gemas y perlas alrededor de algo tan pequeño y frágil?
  3. The title speaks of blood, but no blood is clearly visible: how does that absence affect the way you look at the piece?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

I pause to notice how this tower breathes. The golden and silvery base is richly engraved and holds three cabochons, one green at the front and two reddish on the sides. Higher up the faceted crystal knot catches the light and looks fragile, yet it is securely embraced by metal sprigs, pearls and tiny stones. The little figure carrying the central cup moves me, with its blue, green and turquoise enamel already softened by time. It is all gilt silver from the sixteenth century, and caring for it means caring for those different shines of crystal, gold and pearls.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see it like a small vertical observatory. Symmetrical, built in levels, as if it wanted to reach something high. Light does not just illuminate it, it passes through: the faceted crystal stem, the transparent central cup and the dome and teardrop finial at the top refract and create sparkles. Those glints against the grey background that lightens downward remind me of lenses and telescopes. Although it is a reliquary meant to hold a blood relic according to its title, its shape makes me think of instruments made to guard the invisible and make it visible.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a magic castle for tiny giants! At the bottom it has a shiny round base with colorful little stones like candies, one green in front and two reddish ones. In the middle there is a very tiny person with arms raised holding a giant transparent cup, as if super strong! Everything is decorated with golden flowers, white pearls and green, blue and red gems. At the very top there is a crystal droplet with a little flower on its tip. It sparkles everywhere and surely keeps an invisible treasure inside.

  1. #1

If you look at the round base at the bottom, how many large cabochons are visible from the front and what color is the one right in the center?

    HintPista

Look at the lowest golden part, against the grey background. Count the round shiny stones.

  2. #2

At the heart of the tower there is a tiny thing with raised arms holding the transparent cup, what is it?

    HintPista

Search in the center, just below the large smooth cup. It is not a flower or a pearl.

  3. #3

Right at the top, closing the piece, there is a transparent part shaped like a drop or pear, what is that finial called?

    HintPista

Keep looking upward to the little flower at the tip. It is the final crystal piece.
