What you would seeLo que verías

A small vertical engraving in black ink on warm, slightly rough off-white paper, mounted on a paler support with irregular edges visible. At the center stands a winged woman in three-quarter view, turned to the right in profile, occupying almost the entire height of the sheet. She wears a laurel wreath tied with ribbons that fall behind her neck, and loose classical drapery knotted at the shoulder and belted at the waist. The cloth slips to reveal one breast, an arm, and both bare legs; one foot advances on the dotted ground while the other trails behind, partially hidden by fluttering fabric. Her left hand raises an oval mirror with a decorated rim, and around her right forearm and hand coils a small snake whose head she holds near her hip. Two large feathered wings rise behind her back. In the lower right foreground sits a speckled rectangular stone block, with a large divider compass leaning against it, its point planted on the ground. Behind her, a horizontal wall with dense cross-hatching creates a dark band. Fine parallel lines and cross-hatching model skin, feathers, cloth, and shadow. At upper left appear the initials 'ISB', at upper right the number '2', and along the right edge, vertically, the word 'PRVDENCIA'.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the raised hand and its empty mirror, then follow the arm down to the snake coiled at her waist. Finally, look at the compass resting on the precisely cut block: the three attributes together move the idea of prudence from self-examination to measured action.

ContextContexto

This engraving is Prudence, from the series The Knowledge of God and the Seven Cardinal Virtues, made around 1539 by the German artist Hans Sebald Beham (1500–1550), according to the Cleveland Museum of Art, which preserves it in its Prints department through the Mr. and Mrs. Lewis B. Williams Collection. In European tradition, Prudence is one of the cardinal virtues and is often shown with a mirror, for self-knowledge, and a serpent, for cautious discernment. The compass reinforces the idea of measure and foresight. It is not known, from the information provided, for whom this impression was originally printed.

Curious detailDato curioso

The mirror does not reflect her face: although she holds it high, its oval surface remains blank, so the symbol of self-knowledge is present as an idea, not as a visible reflection.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What does it mean to represent an abstract virtue as a winged body with concrete tools?¿Qué significa representar una virtud abstracta como un cuerpo alado con herramientas concretas?
  2. How do the mirror, the snake, and the compass each change the meaning of the others?¿Cómo se modifican entre sí los significados del espejo, la serpiente y el compás?
  3. If the mirror shows no reflection, who is meant to look into it: Prudence or the viewer?

I pause on how the warm ivory paper holds the black ink and how the cross-hatching gives volume to the wall, the drapery and the wings. The winged figure steps forward holding the mirror in her left hand with the snake coiled around her right arm, while the compass resting on the stone block at lower right suggests measurement and drawing. I am drawn to the initials ISB at upper left, the number 2 and the vertical word PRVDENCIA as series marks.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see Prudence as someone who observes before acting, just as we do when we measure the sky. The oval mirror she lifts is like an instrument that returns an image for self-knowledge, the small snake she holds speaks of careful attention, and the compass set by the stone block recalls foresight and calculation. The large wings and laurel wreath crown that attentive gaze that seeks to understand the path before taking a step.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

She looks like a lady with wings who is walking while looking into a shiny mirror. On one arm she has a little snake that does not look scary and below there is a really big compass leaning on a stone like the ones used to draw circles. Her dress moves in the wind and she wears a little crown with ribbons. I wonder why she has the number 2 at the top and why her name is written on the side as PRVDENCIA.
