A rectangular textile fragment is shown, much wider than it is tall, mounted on a plain sand-coloured support and photographed against a pale grey ground. The original cloth, in the centre, is a faded yellowish beige, thin, worn and irregular at the edges, especially frayed at the left. Its main band is occupied by a bird in profile facing left, placed slightly right of centre, with a small head, a short beak, one wing raised over its back and the other lowered and spread. The body is filled with dense brownish-mauve embroidery, with darker parallel lines marking feathers on the wings and tail. Around it, fine curving stems form spirals, tendrils and two large incomplete circles, one on each side, like vines growing symmetrically. Above, separated by a horizontal line, runs a narrower damaged band with triangles, clusters of small spirals or rosettes, and a dark fan-like shape toward the left. The palette is restrained: aged cream, tan, dusty pink, coppery brown and dark umber. The light is even and diffuse, revealing the woven grain of the ground, the slight sheen of some threads, losses, stains and fragile areas without harsh shadows.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the bird's body and notice how one wing rises and the other drops, creating movement within a very flat surface. Then trace the spiralling vines with your eye: they do not merely fill space, they connect the bird to the circles on either side. Finally, look at the damaged upper band and the frayed edges to remember that this is a surviving fragment, not a complete composition.

ContextContexto

The source identifies this as an embroidered fragment with a bird among vines, made in Baghdad, Iraq, during the Seljuq period, in the 1100s, by an unknown maker. Its ground is a plain weave known as mulham, with a silk warp and cotton weft, embroidered in silk and metallic thread using couched and split stitches. In this period Baghdad was an important urban and craft centre under Seljuq rule, and fine textiles circulated as valuable goods. What larger object this fragment originally belonged to is not known; it was probably once part of a more extensive decorated surface.

Curious detailDato curioso

In couching, the metallic thread is laid on the surface and fastened down with small stitches, instead of being passed repeatedly through the cloth: the precious material remains visible on the front and the fragile thread suffers less wear.

I focus on what is most fragile, that aged creamy cloth, faded and fraying on the left side. It is a mulham with a silk warp and cotton weft, embroidered with silk and metallic thread. I see the faint shine of some threads and also the losses, stains and wear. The bird in the center, in mauve brown, still keeps its dense stitches that mark the feathers. Mounting this fragment on a sandy support was needed to hold it without stressing it.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This textile sky reminds me of a star chart. The bird sits slightly to the right of the center, in profile facing left, with one wing raised and the other extended, as if gliding. Around it there are two large incomplete circles, one on each side, and small spirals turning like orbits. Above there is a narrow band with triangles, rosettes and a fan-like shape. Everything feels symmetrical, like constellations stitched on a sandy background.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

The little bird looks like it is flying! It is in the middle of the cloth, looking to the left, with one little wing up and the other stretched out. All around it there are twisty vines with curly swirls and two big circles like vine swings. Up top there are tiny triangles and little flowers and a dark fan-like spot. The cloth looks very old, cookie-colored, with all the edges frayed, but the little bird is still there, nicely stitched.
