What you would seeLo que verías

A huge rectangular carpet hangs vertically on a white museum wall, so large that its lower end bends forward and spreads across the light parquet floor. The composition is almost perfectly symmetrical around a central emblem: a deep-blue orb with three gold fleurs-de-lis, framed in gold, set in a cream cartouche with two large pale wings, and topped by a gold and pink crown. Around it, on a dark brown ground, unfurls a dense garden of giant acanthus scrolls in dusty pink, salmon red, blue-grey, and turquoise, intertwined with delicate bouquets of roses and small flowers in cream, pale pink, and yellow. At the sides and at the top and bottom appear gold quivers with arrows, tied with blue ribbons — military trophies — alternating with shell-like, heart-shaped ornaments in gold and mint green. A broad golden border frames everything, decorated with pink spheres, blue scrolls, and more flowers. The wool pile gives a matte, slightly velvety texture, very different from the shine of the wooden floor. At the edges of the photograph, a sliver of another painting and a small gilt table on the left give a sense of its monumental scale.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the center, with the blue orb and its crown, and then move outward following the scrolls as if they were unfolding. Notice how the symmetry is not rigid: the flower bouquets soften the heraldry and the military trophies. Finally, look at the lower edge resting on the floor to recover the carpet's original function.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this carpet, woven around 1740–50, is one of three made with this royal pattern. The design was created in 1735 by Pierre-Josse Perrot, an artist at the Savonnerie manufactory, for Louis XV's dining room at the Château de la Muette. The manufactory, founded in the early seventeenth century in the Chaillot workshops, produced French versions of Oriental carpets at a time when their importation was seen as an economic drain. Its technique imitated Turkish carpets: a wool pile made with symmetrical knots, with wool warps and hemp wefts. The brown ground was chosen to heighten the brilliant colors and simplify the lively design for faster weaving.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although it now hangs like a painting, the carpet was made to be walked on: the Savonnerie produced luxury floor coverings for royal residences, using a knotted-pile technique borrowed from Turkish carpets.

What amazes me most is how the colors have survived for almost three hundred years. That dark brown background is not random: it was chosen to make the dusty pinks, turquoises and the golden border pop. If you get closer, imagine the wool pile made knot by knot, with a wool warp and hemp weft. It is a matte, velvety texture, not shiny at all. Think of the work of weaving each acanthus scroll and each little bouquet, simplified on purpose to work faster without losing the opulence.

I see this carpet as a sky map. At the center there is an intense blue orb with three golden fleurs-de-lis, like a crowned planet with wings, organizing everything around it. The symmetry is total: top and bottom, left and right, everything mirrors itself. The quivers with arrows and the giant acanthus scrolls are like constellations repeated in orbit. Even the small bouquets look like scattered stars. It is a universe designed so the eye always returns to the center, to the royal emblem that governs it all.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This carpet is gigantic! It hangs from the wall and still folds onto the floor as if it wanted to lie down. In the middle it has a blue circle with three little golden flowers, with big wings and a crown on top, like a bird king. All around it is full of huge plants in pink and blue that twist like garden snakes. And there are quivers with arrows tied with blue ribbons. I like to look for the tiny hidden roses and count how many flowers I can find on the golden border.
