What you would seeLo que verías

Centered against a smooth grey background that darkens toward the top, a single footed wooden cup occupies the middle of the frame, photographed slightly from above so its rim and shallow interior are visible. The body swells into a broad, rounded bowl of warm, honey-brown maple, then narrows to a short turned stem that flares into a circular foot. Fine horizontal turning lines circle the stem, while the bowl shows hairline cracks, faint scratches, small dark spots and soft variations in tone that suggest age and handling. Two bands of gilt metal frame the wood: a plain, polished rim at the lip, with a delicate pierced frieze of scrolling leaves and tendrils hanging just below it, and a matching openwork gallery around the base. Inside the rim lies a flat wooden surface, slightly recessed and divided by a subtle line. The lighting is soft and even, casting a gentle shadow to the left on the seamless ground and bringing out the contrast between matte grain and reflective gold. No people, text or other objects appear; the scale is not indicated, so the piece reads as intimate and table-sized rather than monumental.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the contrast between the plain, warm wood and the lace-like gilt metal, then look for the fine cracks and turning marks that reveal age and use. Notice that this is only one part of a larger object: its rim and foot help imagine how it once closed — and completed — the cup beneath it.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is the lid of a German double cup, or mazer, dated to about 1530 and made of maple wood with gilt-silver mounts. Such vessels, developed in Germany as early as the thirteenth century, combined a larger footed cup with a smaller upper cup that served as a lid but could also be removed and used separately for drinking. The source states that this smaller cup was set with a memorial portrait medallion of Albrecht Dürer made in 1528, the year of his death, by medallist Matthes Gebel, and that the reverse of the medal was set into the base of the larger cup. That larger cup is not shown in this photograph, and the medallion is not clearly visible here.

Curious detailDato curioso

This lid was also a cup in its own right: lifted off, it could be set down and used for drinking, so a single object served two guests or two moments at the table.

This lid that is also a cup makes me pause on its material. I see honey-colored maple with a lively grain, marked by thin cracks, faint scratches and dark speckles that speak of five centuries of handling. I notice the two bands of gilt silver: the smooth rim at the mouth and the openwork frieze of leaves and curling tendrils hanging below, with a matching gallery at the base. The lathe left fine lines on the short stem and foot. It is a piece dated around 1530, in the German tradition, designed to fit over a larger cup.

I look at it as if it were a circular constellation seen from above. The broad bowl is like a honey-wood horizon narrowing into a short stem and opening into a round foot, like a planet with its equator of golden metal. That soft light casting a shadow to the left reminds me how light reveals relief. This is the smaller cup of a German double mazer from around 1530; it served as a lid for a larger cup not seen here. Set into its interior, recessed in the wood, is the commemorative medal of Albrecht Durer from 1528.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a little honey-wood cup with shiny rings like a crown. If you see it from above you can see its round belly and its short little foot with tiny leaf shapes in the golden metal. It has little lines and speckles because it is very, very old, almost five hundred years old. I like that it is two in one: it is a lid and also a little drinking cup. The other bigger cup is not in the photo and is hidden. Inside it has a sunken circle where a tiny portrait of a man named Durer goes.
