An open bound volume is photographed against a plain gray ground, seen slightly from above. The right-hand page, in warm cream vellum, carries a miniature framed by a dense border of scrolling ivy, small flowers, and gold dots in blue, red, green, and gold. At the top of the page, within a rounded arch, the Virgin sits at left in a voluminous deep-blue mantle over an orange-red dress, a gold halo around her veiled head. She holds the naked Christ Child, also haloed, who reaches toward a golden chalice-like vessel offered by an elderly, white-bearded king kneeling before them in a pale pink robe edged with white ermine. Behind him stand two younger crowned kings, one in green raising a covered vessel, the other in blue with a red collar holding an ornate gift. They gather beneath a simple wooden shelter draped with patterned orange cloth, against a dark blue ground. Below the image, three lines of Latin script in dark ink with red touches open with a large, richly painted initial. The thick page block, dark binding, and two brass clasps at right emphasize the book's small, precious, handmade scale.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the deep blue of the Virgin's mantle, which anchors the scene, then follow the Child's outstretched hands toward the golden vessel. Look next at the contrast between the kneeling king's aged face and the two younger, standing kings behind him. Finally, move outward to the border: the quiet sacred scene overflows into a lively garden of leaves and flowers.

ContextContexto

This is folio 67r from a Book of Hours following the Use of Paris, made around 1420 and attributed to the Bedford Master, a Parisian illuminator active circa 1405–30. It is executed in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum and is now held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. Books of Hours were private prayer books for laypeople, organized around prayers for different times of the day. This miniature shows the Adoration of the Magi, the visit of the kings to the Christ Child. The patron who commissioned this volume is not identified in the available information.

Curious detailDato curioso

The large decorated letter below the image is a 'D' for 'Deus' — the Latin prayer begins 'Deus in adiutorium meum intende' ('O God, come to my assistance'), a traditional opening for the hours of prayer.

  1. What changes when a sacred story is made to be held privately in the hands, rather than seen on a church wall?¿Qué cambia cuando una historia sagrada se hace para sostenerse en privado entre las manos, y no para mirarse en el muro de una iglesia?
  2. Why might the three kings be shown at different ages, and what does that suggest about the journey to the Child?¿Por qué los tres reyes podrían aparecer con edades distintas y qué sugiere eso sobre el viaje hasta el Niño?

If you look closely, you will see what excites me most: this is not just any page, it is warm creamy vellum painted with tempera and gold. Look at the winding ivy border with little flowers and golden dots on blue, red and green, all hand-painted around 1420. The Virgin’s intense blue mantle and the golden halo still shine because gold does not fade. Notice also the brass clasps and the thick block of pages, they remind us this was a small, precious object made to last in private hands.

I always look for the sky in these images and here the background is a dark deep blue, like a moonless night. Inside that arch, three crowned kings have followed a star to a simple wooden shelter with an orange cloth. The eldest, with a white beard and a pale pink tunic trimmed with ermine, kneels and offers a golden cup to the Child. The other two stand waiting with their gifts. It is the Epiphany, the moment when the heavens touch the earth under a humble roof.

I love counting things in this picture! I see a lady with a very big blue cloak sitting with a baby with no clothes who has a little golden light around his head. A man with a crown and a white beard is kneeling and giving him a shiny little cup. Behind there are two more men with crowns, one in green and one in blue, each with a gift. Everything is surrounded by little flowers and vines with touches of gold. At the bottom there are funny letters and a big very painted letter.
