What you would seeLo que verías

The piece stands at the center of the image against a plain background that shifts from nearly black gray at the top to medium gray below. It is a small jade plaque with an irregular outline: broad and rounded at the top, it narrows downward to a curved point, like a teardrop or a shield. Its polished surface catches a soft frontal light, creating white highlights on the raised areas and a short shadow beneath its base. The dominant color is a pale, milky green, mottled with white veins, deeper blue-green patches, and small earthy brown spots, especially along the edges and in the recesses. The texture looks smooth and cool, yet the internal veining gives the stone a crystalline, slightly translucent quality. Carved in low relief, a face in profile appears on the right, looking toward the edge: a forehead marked by horizontal lines, an almond-shaped half-closed eye, a prominent nose, and a mouth with downturned corners and grooves that suggest old age. To the left and behind the face is a large spiral volute and, below it, interlaced forms with straight incisions, small grids, and a diagonal crosshatched band at the bottom. These are fine, worn details that only separate from the background after calm, close looking.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the face in profile on the right and follow the lines of its wrinkles until you reach the half-closed eye. Then move left toward the large spiral: that is where a first reading as a simple portrait begins to expand. Notice how the crosshatched band at the bottom and the mottling of the stone merge figure and surface.

Curious detailDato curioso

In much of Mesoamerica, jade was prized even more highly than gold: its green color was associated with water, vegetation, and life, which helps explain its use in small, carefully carved prestige objects.

I focus on what the jade tells me through its surface. I see a pale milky green with white veins and brownish spots along the edges, signs of time and wear. The polish still catches soft highlights, but the carved lines of the low relief feel smoothed. The profile face with a wrinkled brow and downturned mouth, and the large spiral of the shell behind it, rise only slightly. It is delicate, fine work that asks to be looked at slowly and without touching.

For me this plaque is like a fragment of sky held in stone. From the record I know it shows God N, the old man who holds up the sky in the Maya worldview, seen here in profile with his snail shell on his back. Dated to around 300 to 600 AD, it makes me picture nights with no electric light, when holding the sky was a sacred duty. The dark gray background around it almost looks like the night void where this small jade teardrop floats.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant green droplet that shines like a marble under the light. At first I only see green with little brown spots, but if I get really close a little grandpa face appears in profile, with a sleepy eye and a sad mouth. Behind him there is a curly tail like a snail and below a little band with crosses. I like to think he is a grandpa carrying his little house on his back and that the stone would feel cold and smooth if you could touch it.
