A rectangular block of pale limestone, photographed against a dark gray background, carved in low, sunken relief. Its upper left corner is stepped and missing, and a diagonal break cuts across the lower right; the surface shows fine cracks, small pits, scratches, and worn edges. Three bare-chested men in short kilts stand on a thin ground line, all seen in left-facing profile in the Egyptian convention: heads and legs in profile, torsos partly turned toward the viewer. On the left, a smaller kneeling attendant leans forward with his arms extended out of frame; his hair is rendered as a tight cap of tiny dotted curls. In the center, taller, a priest raises his right hand, palm open, in a ritual gesture. A strap crosses his chest, ribbons fall behind his shoulder, and his left hand holds a long, narrow object hanging by his leg. He wears a smooth, long wig or head covering. On the right, a second attendant stands more passively, arms at his sides, with the same dotted curly hair; the right edge crops a hint of another figure. The stone is matte beige and cream, with soft shadows pooling in the incised outlines and around knees, eyes, and fingers.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the raised hand of the central priest and follow its gesture toward the empty space on the left, where the offerings probably once were. Then compare the hair, feet, and posture of the three figures. The fragment's breaks and missing corner remind you that this is only part of a larger scene.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this limestone relief, by an unknown artist and dated to about 667–647 BCE, comes from Late Period Egypt, Dynasties 25–26. It shows a priest and two attendants performing ceremonies for a deceased person; offerings probably originally appeared to the left. The source notes that it is an exact copy, with the figures reversed, of a scene in the Temple of Deir el-Bahari made some seven centuries earlier. That deliberate copying reflects a broader Late Period interest in reviving much older models. The specific tomb or building it came from is not given in the source, so that remains unknown.

Curious detailDato curioso

This image was already an antiquarian copy when it was carved: it reproduces, in reverse, a scene created some 700 years earlier at Deir el-Bahari — roughly like a contemporary artist faithfully copying a medieval altarpiece today.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Why would artists seven centuries later copy an older temple scene so exactly, and what did that antiquity give the image?¿Por qué unos artistas copiarían con tanta exactitud, siete siglos después, una escena antigua de un templo, y qué le aportaba esa antigüedad a la imagen?
  2. What changes when we realize the action is aimed at offerings that no longer survive in this fragment?¿Qué cambia al saber que la acción se dirige a unas ofrendas que ya no se conservan en este fragmento?
  3. How do repetition of profiles, hair, and kilts create a sense of order and ritual calm?¿Cómo crean sensación de orden y calma ritual la repetición de perfiles, cabellos y faldellines?

I focus on the material: a rectangular block of pale limestone in beige and cream tones, matte and a little dusty. I see the missing stepped corner at the upper left, the diagonal fracture at the lower right, and that network of fine cracks, little pits and worn edges left by time. The sunken low relief still casts soft shadows around knees, eyes and fingers that remain very legible. I am interested in how the ritual gesture and the Egyptian profile pose survived despite all the surface wear.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What draws me is the idea of copying across time. The record says this relief from around 667 to 647 B.C., in the Late Period, is an exact but reversed copy of a scene at Deir el-Bahari made some seven centuries earlier. It is like watching a constellation reappear centuries later in a different sky. Three figures in profile facing left, wearing short kilts, repeat an old funerary ritual out of a deliberate desire to revive much older models. We do not know which building it came from, and that makes it even more mysterious.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I see three men with no shirts and little short skirts, all sideways looking to the left. One is kneeling and stretching his hands out of the picture, as if he is fixing something we cannot see anymore. The one in the middle is the tallest and raises his hand like saying stop or hi. The third one is just standing and watching. The stone is cookie colored with little spots and it has a broken corner and a thin line crossing it. I imagine they are doing a serious ceremony to say goodbye to someone.
