What you would seeLo que verías

An open two-page sketchbook is seen from directly above against a dark grey background. The paper is a warm, aged cream with pale blue horizontal ruled lines, typical of a school notebook, its edges slightly yellowed, softened and curled with age. Near the upper middle of each page a single graphite line floats: on the left a thin, wavy stroke like a distant cloud, on the right a thicker, straighter horizontal mark suggesting a horizon. The lower half of the spread is filled with a dense, tangled, energetic mass of graphite scribbles. At a glance it looks like abstract doodling, but a slower look reveals dozens of small circular and ovoid loops implying heads, hats and clustered bodies, as if a crowd on a beach seen from afar. Strokes overlap, smudge and vary from dark, soft deposits to faint whispers, creating texture and depth on the lined surface. At the bottom left a tapered shape extends outward, possibly a pier, boat or rock. Even, diffuse light reveals the grain of the graphite and the fibrous, slightly foxed paper without harsh shadows.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the whole spread and the quiet horizon line that spans both pages. Then drop your eye to the tangled lower mass and let the loops resolve into a crowd. Notice how almost no figure is drawn completely, yet the whole suggests movement and density.

ContextContexto

This spread is from a 69-page sketchbook by Maurice Prendergast (American, born in Newfoundland [now Canada], 1858–1924), dated 1905–10 in the Cleveland Museum of Art records. Medium is listed as graphite, classified as a Bound Volume in the Drawings department. According to the museum description, the sketchbook contains drawings, a diary largely devoted to the artist's health, and a three-page discourse on the nature of genius and ideas. It was a Gift of Mrs. Charles E. Prendergast. No specific location for this Beach View is documented, but Prendergast frequently sketched crowded leisure scenes in parks and at the shore, often as studies for later watercolors.

Curious detailDato curioso

Prendergast is best known for highly colorful, pattern-like watercolors of leisure, so these spare, almost illegible pencil notations reveal the opposite side of his practice: rapid shorthand to fix the rhythm of a crowd before any color was added.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How many individual heads can you count if you follow each small loop?¿Cuántas figuras puedes distinguir si sigues cada círculo como si fuera una cabeza?
  2. How does the sense of depth shift if you read the upper horizontal line as sea rather than sky?¿Cómo cambia la sensación de espacio si imaginas que la línea superior es el mar y no el cielo?
  3. What does the use of ordinary lined notebook paper suggest about the private, everyday purpose of this sketch?¿Qué te dice el papel rayado sobre el carácter íntimo y cotidiano de este dibujo?

The conservatorLa restauradora

What you see here is not carelessness, it is the life of the material. This yellowish cream paper with light blue school notebook lines is worn and slightly wavy with age, and that interests me as much as the drawing itself. The soft graphite is applied with different pressure: fine strokes on top for the horizon and a dense mass below where graphite dust embeds into the paper fiber. I notice the smudges, the rubbing and how the artist blended the strokes to create shadows, all captured with even light that reveals the grainy texture.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

For me this is like stargazing with the naked eye. On top you have two graphite horizon lines, one wavy and one straight, like two different skies. Below, that dark tangle is a constellation of dots: each small circle or oval is a head, a hat, a body. Up close it looks like chaos, but if you squint the crowd on the beach emerges, just as a star cluster takes shape when you observe calmly. It is an exercise in seeing the large within the small.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like someone made a lot of scribbles! At first I thought it was just pencil marks, but if you get closer you see lots of little heads and hats all huddled together like when you go to the beach and there are so many people. I like that he used his school notebook with little blue lines to draw. On top he made a little cloud with the pencil and on the other side a straight line. Down below everyone is crowded together and it looks fun, like they are playing in the sand.
