The image shows a single lined notebook page viewed straight on, aged to a warm creamy yellow with faint foxing and wear. Two handwritten entries in dark blue ink occupy the ruled paper, which has pale blue horizontal lines and a vertical margin on the left. At the top, dated November 5th 1905, the text reads a very fine Sunday. went in swimming at the Inlet and walked around the beach naked for an hour and a half. The handwriting is cursive and fluid, slanting to the right, with slightly enlarged capitals for November and light crossings out. Below, after several blank lines, a second entry dated November 10 1905 records received $400.00 from Mrs Williams for oil painting The Promenade. She is delighted with it she expresses every thing which I felt in painting it. The script becomes more compressed toward the bottom. Physical details of the bound volume are visible: worn and slightly curled edges, small binding holes along the left gutter, rust spots, a soft shadow by the spine, and a small penciled number 6 in the lower corner. Even, diffuse light reveals the fibrous texture of the paper and faint ink show-through, giving a sense of a handled, everyday object rather than a formal artwork.

En la parte superior se lee November 5th 1905. a very fine Sunday. went in swimming at the Inlet and walked around the beach naked for an hour and a half. Abajo, separada por varias líneas en blanco, una segunda entrada fechada November 10 1905 anota received $400.00 from Mrs Williams for oil painting The Promenade. She is delighted with it she expresses every thing which I felt in painting it.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the two dates and notice the shift from a private, sensory recollection to a proud professional announcement. Follow the rhythm of the handwriting and the empty lines between entries, then look closely at the paper's edges and binding marks to appreciate its age and intimate scale.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this leaf belongs to a 69-page sketchbook by Maurice Prendergast (American, born in Newfoundland, 1858–1924), dated 1905–10. The volume holds drawings, a diary largely devoted to the artist's health, and a three-page discourse on genius and ideas. This particular page preserves two brief November 1905 notes: a personal recollection of swimming and walking on the beach, and a professional record of the sale of the oil painting The Promenade to Mrs. Williams for $400. While the museum record lists the technique as graphite, the visible medium here is handwritten ink, likely part of the diary section.

Curious detailDato curioso

Prendergast is celebrated for vibrant, mosaic-like watercolors and oils of leisure and seaside promenades, so this plainly written account of selling a work titled The Promenade offers a rare, matter-of-fact glimpse behind his colorful public imagery.

If you look closely at the paper you will see why I linger here. It is a creamy yellowish tone with light blue horizontal lines and a vertical margin on the left, with curled edges, binding perforations and small rust spots we call foxing. The dark blue ink is slightly transparent and lets the paper fiber show through. I am fascinated by how two different handwritings coexist: the November fifth entry looser and airier and the tenth tighter, as if hurry or the excitement of the sale changed the stroke.

For me this page is a dated observation, almost like a sky log. We have two different days recorded with an implied time: a very fine Sunday November fifth nineteen oh five good for swimming at the inlet and walking on the beach, and a November tenth with the sale of The Promenade for four hundred dollars. Like in an observing notebook, the everyday and the important sit together because of the date. I love how that sunny Sunday was trapped in ink and how the even light on the paper lets us read time itself.

This sheet looks like my notebook but super old! It has light blue lines, yellowish paper and bent corners as if someone kept it for a long time. At the top it says it was Sunday and someone went swimming and walked on the beach, and at the bottom it says he sold a painting called The Promenade to a lady for a lot of money and she was very happy. I imagine the artist writing quickly with his blue pen and leaving blank spaces, like when we leave room to draw later.
