What you would seeLo que verías

The foreground is dominated by a single lined notebook page in aged ivory with a warm yellow cast, ruled with pale blue horizontal lines and a faint left margin. The paper belongs to a bound sketchbook whose worn spine and curled edges are visible on the left, revealing a thick stack of pages beneath. Across the surface runs fluid cursive handwriting in dark blue ink, slanted to the right, with varying pressure that creates thicker downstrokes and thinner upstrokes. At the top, the heading November 16th introduces a six-line paragraph, followed lower down by November 17th and a five-line entry. Some words show light crossing out or overwriting. Even lighting reveals the paper's fibrous texture, subtle foxing and staining at the edges, and the slight sheen of the ink. The background is a flat neutral gray that isolates the open book. In the lower left corner a small faint number 8 marks the pagination, barely darker than the paper itself.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Follow the handwriting first as a visual rhythm before reading the words. Notice the slant and ink density, then compare the tone of November 16th with the shift on November 17th, where fatigue gives way to a moment of energy.

ContextContexto

This is page 008 from a sketchbook by Maurice Prendergast (1858–1924), an American artist born in Newfoundland, dated 1905–10 in the records of the Cleveland Museum of Art. The bound volume holds 69 pages of drawings, a diary largely focused on the artist's health, and a short discourse on genius and ideas. The museum's technical entry lists graphite, although this particular page visibly shows ink handwriting on ruled paper. The legible entries refer to physical discomfort, mood, and daily activities such as drinking coffee and swimming, consistent with the diary-like nature of the book. It was likely written during travel or an extended stay away from the studio. No further biographical details are confirmed on this page alone.

Curious detailDato curioso

The entire bound sketchbook, including drawings and handwritten diaries, survives intact at the Cleveland Museum of Art as a gift from Mrs. Charles E. Prendergast, allowing the artist's private notes to be seen alongside his visual work.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does the handwriting itself — pressure, corrections, slant — communicate more than the literal meaning of the text?¿Qué revela la forma de escribir —tachaduras, presión, inclinación— sobre el estado de ánimo más allá de las palabras?
  2. How does encountering an artist's private diary change the way we interpret his finished artworks?¿Cómo cambia nuestra lectura de un artista al ver su diario íntimo junto a sus dibujos?
  3. Why might it matter to preserve crossed-out words and unfinished thoughts instead of a clean transcription?¿Qué valor tiene conservar correcciones y palabras incompletas en lugar de una versión pulida?

I focus on the ivory paper yellowed with age and its pale blue lines. You can see the fiber, the rust spots and the folded corners of the bound notebook. The dark blue ink shows a right-slanted cursive hand, with varied pressure and a few crossed-out words. Although the record lists graphite, what we see here is ink on lined paper. I am drawn to how the even light reveals the raised ink and the worn spine, intimate traces of everyday use.

This page 008 is like an observation log, but instead of stars it records the body and mood. It has two entries, November 16th with six lines and November 17th with five lines, dated between 1905 and 1910 according to the museum. The notebook is thick, with 69 pages, and here we see only a fragment of that personal orbit. I like to think the pencil number 8 in the corner and the neutral gray background act as coordinates helping us locate this moment in time.

This notebook looks like my school one! It has little blue lines and the stitched edge on the left side. The handwriting is curly and slanted, as if it were running to the right, and there are crossed-out words because he made a mistake. At the top it says November 16th and a little lower November 17th. The paper looks old, cookie-colored, with little spots and bent tips. I imagine the man writing about his day, if he had coffee or went swimming, just like when I write my diary.
