What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows a full page from a ruled notebook, photographed against a dark gray background visible around the edges. The aged, yellowish-cream paper fills almost the entire frame; its lower corners are rounded, and thin layers of other pages can be seen along the left side. On the right, the bound edge shows small dark marks from the stitching or staples. Pale blue horizontal lines run across the sheet from side to side, leaving a wider margin at the top. A small handwritten number, barely legible, appears in the upper left corner. At the center, slightly above the middle, is a tiny human figure drawn in graphite with loose, quick, broken strokes. It stands in profile, leaning to the left, with its head lowered. The tangled curves at the top suggest hair, a hat, or perhaps two heads held very close together. The torso is summed up in a few vertical and oval lines; the arms seem crossed or pressed against the body, and the hands are only hinted at. The legs are two long, wavering lines ending in sketched shoes, one like a hook and the other like a scribble. The rest of the page remains empty, so the contrast between so much ruled paper and such a brief, fragile drawing dominates the scene.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the emptiness of the page, then let your eye find the small figure at the center. Notice how the ruled lines pass behind the body without becoming a ground or setting. Finally, look closely at the tangled lines of the head: that is where the drawing becomes hardest to read, and where it changes most.

ContextContexto

This is page 071, titled Figure, from a sketchbook by Maurice Prendergast (1858–1924), an American artist born in Newfoundland, now Canada. Dated 1905–10 and drawn in graphite, it belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art, as a gift of Mrs. Charles E. Prendergast. According to the museum, the bound volume contains 69 pages of drawings, a diary largely devoted to the state of the artist's health, and a three-page discourse on the nature of genius and ideas. Who the figure is, where it was observed, and whether it was a study for another work are not known; it was probably a quick note made by eye or from memory.

Curious detailDato curioso

This almost empty page comes from a volume that was not only for drawing: alongside 69 pages of drawings, the sketchbook contains a diary devoted largely to the artist's health and a three-page text on genius and ideas.

If you look closely you will see the paper is not white but a yellowish cream aged by time, crossed by pale blue horizontal lines typical of an everyday school notebook. I love the contrast between such an ordinary surface and the fragile graphite gesture at the center. Notice the rounded bottom corners and the stitched edge on the right with its dark binding marks. Everything speaks of a handled, intimate object that holds in its layers the memory of Prendergast's sketchbook from 1905 to 1910.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This tiny figure reminds me of a lone star in a huge sky. It sits there, just above the center, leaning to the left with its head bowed, made of just a few shaky pencil lines. The rest is emptiness, pure ruled paper stretching like outer space. I like to think that Prendergast, between 1905 and 1910, caught a fleeting human moment and left it floating. The solitude of the page speaks of how small we are and how vast what surrounds us is.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like someone drew super fast and forgot to finish. There is just one tiny person in the middle of a huge sheet full of blue lines. She is in profile, hunched over, with legs like two wobbly sticks and shoes like little hooks. On top there are tangled scribbles, maybe her hair or a funny hat. It makes me giggle with tenderness because the whole page is empty and she looks all alone, as if hiding inside her notebook.
