What you would seeLo que verías

An open lined notebook spread in warm ivory paper, slightly foxed and yellowed with age, photographed flat against a dark gray support. Faint blue horizontal ruling runs across both pages, numbered 152 and 153 in the top corners. A loose graphite sketch fills the center, bounded by quick vertical border lines that frame the view. The drawing is all gesture: dense, scribbled hatching at the top for sky or clouds, wavy and jagged strokes in the middle for restless water, and more horizontal, calmer lines near the bottom for shore or horizon. Handwritten cursive notes are woven into the graphite — the words «yellow», «blue», «tints» and other hurried, barely legible jottings about hue and tone. Pressure varies, creating soft pale grays and darker, almost smudged accents. In the foreground the paper's fibrous texture, worn edges and tiny stains are visible; in the background the notebook margins and binding crease are clear under even, archival lighting. The scale feels small and intimate, a pocket sketchbook. Small details emerge on close looking: overlapping erasures, directional arrows and a faint looping line on the left margin suggesting a post or figure.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the rough vertical frame, then move from the turbulent scribbles at the top down to the calmer horizontals below. Notice the handwritten color words — they turn a fleeting seascape into a set of painting instructions.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is pages 152 and 153 from a sketchbook by Maurice Prendergast (American, born in Newfoundland, 1858–1924), dated 1905–10, executed in graphite as part of a bound volume. The sketchbook holds 69 pages of drawings, a diary largely about the artist's health, and a short essay on genius. The museum describes this spread as a view of the sea with color notations. The exact location is not documented, likely a quick outdoor note to capture composition and palette for later work. Prendergast is known for Post-Impressionist watercolors and oils of beaches and leisure, and often made such annotated sketches on his travels.

Curious detailDato curioso

Prendergast often wrote color names like «yellow» right onto graphite sketches so he could recall the palette later in the studio without carrying paints outdoors.

  1. How does a landscape change when it is described with color words rather than detailed drawing?¿Qué te sugiere que un paisaje esté hecho más de palabras de color que de detalles dibujados?
  2. What does seeing a private, unfinished note reveal about an artist's process versus a finished painting?¿Cómo cambia la idea de terminado cuando ves un apunte íntimo y no una obra para exhibir?
  3. What sound or weather can you imagine from these rapid marks of the sea?¿Qué sonidos o temperatura imaginas a partir de estos trazos rápidos del mar?

I focus on the time-yellowed ivory paper and its pale blue ruled lines, still visible beneath the graphite. I notice the varied pencil pressure, from light grey to dark grey, and those irregular vertical borders that frame the view as if the artist were looking through a window. The age spots and paper fiber tell me this is an intimate, well-used object. The handwritten words like «yellow» or «blue» are not decoration, they are instructions for a future painting.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This sketch reminds me of how I log the night sky, with quick scribbles to remember the essentials. At the top I see dense, broken strokes suggesting stormy clouds, like a moving atmosphere. In the middle the wavy lines are waves, a dynamic horizon. I feel that Prendergast, between 1905 and 1910, wanted to capture light and weather in seconds, just as I jot down colors and shapes before they change. It is a memory map to return to later in the studio.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a school notebook but full of waves made with scribbles. I like that the sea is drawn with lines going back and forth, as if the water were really moving. At the top there are lots of doodles for the clouds, like a windy sky. In the middle of the drawing there are words in English naming colors, like «yellow» and «blue», like secret clues. It is tiny, pocket-sized, and you can tell the artist took it to the beach to draw quickly.
