What you would seeLo que verías

The image presents a single sheet from a lined notebook, viewed straight on with a thin dark gray surround. The paper is aged cream to pale yellow, with faint blue horizontal rules and a vertical margin line; the top and bottom edges are slightly worn and lightly foxed. In the foreground, handwritten text in blue-black ink dominates, in fluid, right-slanted cursive with varying pressure. At the top it reads «May 18th Granville» followed by lines that are crossed out and rewritten: «Honor's the noblest chase pursue that game and recompense the loss of love with fame». Centrally placed is another copied maxim: «accustom yourself to master things which you seem to despair of». Below, the date «May 19th 1906» is written in larger script, followed by a daily entry: «Very warm day Temperature 80» and «doing no work and it causes me a lot of Bother...» with the word Time emphasized and a small ink blot nearby. Even, soft lighting reveals the paper's fibrous texture and the pen's ink pooling. In the lower right corner the printed page number «19» is visible.

Arriba se lee «May 18th Granville» seguido de versos tachados y reescritos: «Honor's the noblest chase pursue that game and recompense the loss of love with fame». Más abajo, centrado, otro aforismo: «accustom yourself to master things which you seem to despair of». Sigue la fecha «May 19th 1906», luego anotaciones cotidianas: «Very warm day Temperature 80» y «doing no work and it causes me a lot of Bother...» con la palabra Time subrayada y una pequeña mancha de tinta.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the shifts in handwriting to separate copied quotations from personal remarks. Notice the crossings-out that show active editing while copying. Consider how the lofty tone of the maxims contrasts with the intimate complaint about idleness in the heat.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is page 19 from a sketchbook by Maurice Prendergast (American, born in Newfoundland, now Canada, 1858–1924), dated overall to 1905–10, though this sheet is dated May 18 and 19, 1906 in Granville. The recorded medium is graphite, the category is Bound Volume, in the Drawings department. The source description notes the sketchbook holds 69 pages of drawings, a diary largely devoted to the artist's health, and a three-page discourse on genius and ideas. It is not specified whether this page belongs to the diary or the notes section, but its content mixes copied quotations, maxims, and personal weather and work observations.

Curious detailDato curioso

While the museum record lists the medium as graphite, this page is clearly executed in pen and ink, indicating the sketchbook mixes media across its 69 pages.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does copying maxims about honor and fame relate to the personal note about not working and feeling bothered?¿Qué relación ves entre copiar aforismos sobre honor y fama y la anotación personal sobre el ocio y la culpa?
  2. How does knowing the same book contains drawings and health notes affect how you read this text page?¿Cómo cambia la lectura al saber que el mismo cuaderno registra tanto dibujos como el estado de salud del artista?
  3. What does the use of ordinary ruled stationery, rather than fine art paper, suggest about the sketchbook's everyday function?¿Qué te dice el soporte —papel rayado comercial, no papel de artista— sobre el uso cotidiano de este cuaderno?

Look at the creamy yellowish tone of the paper and how the blue ruled lines still hold beneath the blue black ink. I notice the slightly worn edges and faint spots, traces of time between 1905 and 1910. The uneven pen pressure and the little ink blot next to the word Time tell me a lot about the artist quick gesture in Granville. It is page 19 that asks for even light and careful handling, because its value lies in that cursive handwriting and in the fibrous texture that still breathes.

I read Very warm day Temperature 80 written on May 19th 1906 and I think about how we watch the sky every day. To me this notebook is a log like our observing journals, where Granville is the station and the heat is the data point. There are no drawings of stars here, just crossed out verses about honor and fame and short maxims, but that habit of noting date, place and temperature turns the everyday into an archive. It is a memory of weather and mood, just as we measure the passage of time.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I see a lined sheet like my school notebook but very old and yellowish. At the top it says May 18th Granville in slanted running handwriting and there are crossed out words as if he made a mistake and rewrote. Below it says May 19th 1906 and that it was very hot, 80, and the word Time is underlined with a little ink spot next to it. In the corner there is the number 19. I like to imagine the man writing quickly with his pen that sometimes left extra ink.
