What you would seeLo que verías

At the center of a creamy yellowed lined sheet a sailboat appears in quick overlapping strokes of dark grey graphite. The vessel, seen in profile from the port side, fills the middle third of the page; its elongated hull is suggested by thick horizontal hatching that hints at a reflection on the water. Two masts carry triangular sails rendered with angular intersecting gestures, showing transparency and visible corrections. Inside the boat two highly schematic human figures can be discerned: one toward the bow, just a circle for a head and a curved torso, and another toward the stern, crouched with a hunched back. The pale blue ruled lines run uninterrupted behind the drawing, a reminder that this is an ordinary notebook. The paper has slightly darkened worn edges, a small rust stain at the top right corner and the number 85 penciled at the bottom right. The light is flat and even, typical of an archival photograph, and the grainy graphite texture contrasts with the smooth lined paper.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the swift searching lines of the sails, where several strokes chase the final shape. Then pause on the two tiny figures: their simplicity shifts the scale and animates the boat. Notice how the blue notebook lines both compete with and support the drawing.

ContextContexto

This sheet comes from a sketchbook by Maurice Prendergast (American, born in Newfoundland, now Canada, 1858–1924), dated 1905–10 according to Cleveland Museum of Art records. The bound volume holds 69 pages of drawings plus a diary focused on the artist's health and a three-page text on genius and ideas. The medium is listed as graphite on ruled paper. The book was a gift of Mrs. Charles E. Prendergast. No specific information is given about the location or occasion for this sailboat sketch, likely a rapid on-the-spot notation, a common practice for the artist who often depicted leisure outdoors.

Curious detailDato curioso

Prendergast habitually carried small pocket sketchbooks to capture everyday beach and park scenes in instant strokes that he later developed into vibrantly colored watercolors and oils.

I focus on this yellowish cream lined paper, the number 85 at the bottom and the rust stain in the corner. I see dark gray graphite layered in quick strokes correcting the hull and the two triangular sails. The blue lines of the notebook run right through the drawing and remind us this was not fine paper, it was an everyday support. I worry about how to preserve that transparent stroke and the worn edge without erasing the history of the artist’s daily use.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

Even though it shows the sea, I look at the movement. Two masts with triangular sails tilted as if pushed by wind, the long hull hinted with horizontal shading that looks like a reflection. Two tiny figures, one at the bow and one hunched at the stern, balance the boat like weights. It makes me think of sailing, of reading the wind and direction, a quick sketch from life to catch a moment that never stays still.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the man drew really fast in his school notebook. You can see the blue lines under the boat and it makes me laugh because I draw like that too when I am bored. The sailboat has two sticks with triangle cloths and two tiny people, one sitting in front and one crouching in back. You can tell he used a lot of pencil and erased just a little. I like that it does not look perfect, it seems like the boat is moving.
